8 Hotels Every Solo Traveler Needs to Check Out

They say that one is the loneliest number, but when you're networking, socializing, and connecting with likeminded travelers, a plus one can be one too many. If you're looking to do it alone, these are the best hotels for solo travel.

Papaya Playa Project, Tulum, Mexico

Tulum is the perfect place to wonder aimlessly, bump into strangers, and make new friends, and Papaya Playa Project is ground zero for solo travelers. A self-proclaimed “communal playground for the creative community,” Papaya benefits from prime beachfront real estate and a never-ending roster of things to do, from yoga and meditation sessions to DJ sets, concerts, and readings in an amphitheater. Our favorite feature, however, might be its standalone bungalows that stretch nearly half a mile down a white sand beach and 13 acres of lush jungle.

Fellah Hotel, Marrakech, Morocco

For an escape a little further from home, stay at Fellah Hotel, a beautiful boutique hotel in the foothills of Morocco's Atlas Mountains. Here, it's all about about fostering a community among guests and the locals. Grab a bite at the onsite café, which is run by residents of the nearby Tassoultante village, visit an artist-in-residence, or check out one of the books at the UNESCO-recognized Dar al-Ma’mûn library, art space, and research center. JS tip: keep a look out for regularly scheduled events at Salon Mahler, which hosts everything from classical piano concerts and lively DJ sets to independent film screenings and themed dinner parties.

Maderas Village, Playa Maderas, Nicaragua

Deep in the jungle hills of Nicaragua, you'll find one of the world's first hipster-meets-backpacker, community-centric resorts. At Maderas Village you can spend your days a variety of ways—surfing, napping in a hammock, hiking, reading—and when you feel like being social there are daily group yoga sessions, family-style meals, and even communal sleeping facilities (thatched-roof casitas and bungalows) if that's your thing.

The Asbury Hotel, Asbury Park, New Jersey

The Jersey Shore has come a long way since its MTV glory days, when eight local twenty-somethings were rocketed into reality TV stardom. Case in point: The Asbury Hotel, a next-gen sleep (and the area's first hotel in half a century) that's squashing the Shore's seedy reputation. The ground-floor lounge doubles as a rec room, with ping-pong, pinball, board games, and a communal table for meals. There's also an adjacent music library where guests can play records on a turn table and a "beer garden," along with a 4,300-square-foot rooftop that transforms into a cinema when the sun goes down.

La Granja, Ibiza, Spain

It’s time to rethink Ibiza’s reputation as an all-night party destination for rich, yacht-owning entourages. That's what Claus Sendlinger did. Instead of setting up shop on one of the island's rollicking golden beaches, he headed to the country to open La Granja. Pared down and rustic, the centuries-old stone farmhouse is now a nine-bedroom retreat where likeminded guests interested in slowing down come to commune with nature. We especially love the hotel's "rituals" series—sessions on communal farming, health eating, yoga, and more.

The Surf Lodge, Montauk, New York

It’s a different kind of communal vibe at the Surf Lodge—more the see-and-be-seen type—but it’s a still a place you can fly solo. The Hamptons mainstay has reached near iconic status, thanks to its live music and late-night dance parties, celebrity sightings and boho-chic interiors. During the day, you'll find the pretty people slurping oysters at the hotel restaurant, taking a yoga class, or sunbathing on the deck. The night scene is mostly the same, so saddle up at the bar or find a cozy spot by the bonfire, stick your toes in the sand, and meet somebody.

Green Rooms, London

Green Rooms, in up-and-coming Wood Green, is all about community, a place for artists, musicians and entrepreneurs to mingle and get inspired. There's a third-floor gallery that displays rotating works of art, a performance space for rising local talents, and numerous co-working nooks. As for the rooms, they're stylishly spare, with blond wood furnishings and simple bedding. Don't miss the on-site restaurant where a cast of budding chefs test our their recipes on guests.

El Cosmico, Marfa, Texas

Texan hotelier Liz Lambert is queen of creating hotel experiences perfect for the boho solo traveler. In the vast desert plains of artsy Marfa, Texas, El Cosmico is a nomadic campground of trailers, teepees, yurts, and tents that offer a glorious, no-frills stay. During the day, there are workshops on building and design, cooking, botany, music and more (plus, the town of Marfa is a short drive away). At night, guests gather at the outdoor stage or around the campfire to sing songs, drink cocktails, and count shooting stars.
