Is This The Coolest New Bar in Paris?
We take you inside La Commune, a hip new drinking den with punch cocktails, hip hop tunes, an eye-catching bar, and killer people-watching.
In a city like Paris, one needn’t wander far to stumble upon a cool watering hole. But La Commune, a stylish newcomer in the heart of Belleville, is worth seeking out for its cooler-than-thou clientele, elegant interiors, and creative menu celebrating great French spirits— cognac, Armagnac, eau de vie, and rhum agricole to name a few. Walk through a clandestine shopfront and into the stunning space— all concrete walls, brass accents, and gleaming reflective surfaces — then take a seat at the marble bar. Drinks come in giant silver punch bowls, and are inspired by recipes from Africa, India, and the West Indies. We tried The Cintronelle N.5, a fragrant combination of Indian lemon grass, fresh pineapple juice, ginger lemonade, Indian peppers, Corsican cedrat liquer, and cognac, and the Tierquar, a heady mix of Marie-Galante rum, Rooibos tea, Martinican rum, elderflower liqueur, champagne, and pomace brandy. Between the sophisticated sips and lively scene (hip hop music, beautiful people, a jungle-like terrace with plants and cozy armchairs), it’s the kind of place you’ll want to stay awhile — then rush back home to tell all your friends about.
