Where Jetsetters Jet
Each day, we fill your inbox with inspirational trips far and wide. But where do we love to jetset when we’re not helping you plan the perfect trip? From the weeklong retreat on a private island in Turks and Caicos to the quick Adirondack escape; from the Philippe Starck-designed Miami party pad to the hammock-flanked Tulum sanctuary, our staff rounds up their greatest getaways.
Tortuga Bay, Dominican Republic
WHO: Charlotte Steinway, Editorial Producer
WHY: "On an island overrun by all-inclusive resorts, Tortuga Bay is a boutique oasis in its own Oscar de la Renta–designed light. With just 30 suites, the Dominican beachfront hotel has a country club feel to it, right down to the designated golf cart and cruiser bikes that come standard with your suite. Each guest is also assigned a “villa manager” who can be reached on the cell phone given to you upon arrival — but we ditched technology in favor of chaise-lounging by the beach, sipping passion fruit mojitos by the pool, and golf-carting to the adjacent ecological preserve."
Stein Eriksen, Park City
WHO: Kathleen Hanefeld, Regional Sales Director
WHY: "Stein Eriksen is an exceptional property in the heart of Park City, and it captures the essence of the region with the finest service. It’s a five-star property but it’s completely unpretentious — the guestrooms are spacious, with super-comfortable beds and top-of-the-line amenities such as Molton Brown bath products and plush terrycloth robes and slippers. I visited in the fall, and it was such a beautiful time to experience all the property has to offer, such as the spa and first class dining at Glitretind. It is so convenient for ski-in/ski-out, and I look forward to visiting again during the winter season."
The Dean, Providence
WHO: Felipe Araujo, Senior Pricing Associate
WHY: "The Dean is the kind of hotel I wish I encountered more often across America: small, intimate and meticulously designed to honor the city of Providence – both its present and past. Though the hotel is a true local, it feels very global, with unique vintage pieces pulled from all over the world, paired perfectly with custom-made furniture by Rhode Island artisans. The staff puts service first, reminding me of Swiss hospitality institutions such as the Lausanne Palace. The Dean also has a German beer hall that serves great food, a discreet cocktail lounge tucked in the back and a traditional karaoke lounge that will make you feel as if you’re in Tokyo. What else do you need? Oh yeah, they also welcome you with a bathroom sink filled with Narragansett Del’s Shandy on ice."
The Delano, Miami
WHO: Chrissy Idol, Editorial Intern
WHY: "Designed by the legendary Philippe Starck, the Delano Hotel in Miami Beach embraces a 1950s feel in a whimsical way. With its interiors, filled with the works of Eames and Dalí, and a healthy dose of Art Deco, electrifying masterpieces can be found around every corner. Retro opulence is brought to life in the sexy Rose Bar, with its dramatic furnishings, low-hanging chandeliers and extensive cocktail menu. Beyond the bar, another focal point of this impressive hotel is the palm tree- and cabana-ringed pool area — a surefire place for celebrity sightings."
Town Hall Hotel, London
WHO: Rachel Beard, Associate Editor
WHY: "My favorite hotels combine style, character and a true sense of place, and Town Hall Hotel in London’s East End scores high on all counts, from its gorgeous Edwardian façade to its original marble lobby, which is stuffed with Art Deco furniture and vintage curios. The apartment-style rooms are hip but homey, with full kitchens, peekaboo bathrooms and Midcentury furnishings — they’re a bit like Don Draper’s London pied-à-terre. Fittingly, there’s a speakeasy bar downstairs that shakes up a mean Old Fashioned."
Diamonds Star of the East, Zanzibar
WHO: Marilena Zagana, Regional Sales Director
WHY: "The 11-villa Diamonds Star of the East is as magical as Zanzibar itself, and it completely exceeded our expectations. It’s an upscale all-inclusive property where 24-hour butler service comes standard. (We made full use of it, from organizing in-villa yoga sessions to having sundowners and canapés served by our private pool.) The food is exceptional; the fresh grilled lobster was a highlight, as was the candlelit dinner served on the beach after we consulted with the chef on the menu. It’s in a secluded spot, set back from surrounding hotels, and the white sand beach stretches for miles."
Gansevoort Park Avenue, New York City
WHO: Erin Liszewki, Marketing Manager
WHY: "My favorite hotel when traveling to New York City for business (more like “bleasure”) is the Gansevoort Park Avenue, which has all the amenities I need when traveling for work, but also has the fun factor. The rooms are spacious and have incredibly comfortable beds, so I can be well rested for work. In addition, the gym is large enough that I’m not fighting to get a treadmill in the morning. But beyond these business basics, the hotel also has an Exhale spa (great barre classes), a fantastic bar and a sexy rooftop pool with views of the Empire State Building — I mean, is there any better way to end a workday?"
Grace Bay Club, Turks and Caicos
WHO: Sean Murphy, Editor in Chief
WHY: "It’s the Grace Bay Club’s prime location on one of the world’s best beaches that had me at first sight, but I fell deep for it because of the resort’s clear dedication to service, which includes a personal concierge, friendly, eager-to-please staff, and an eco-conscious, activity-filled kids program that makes mommy-daddy relaxing — by the infinity pool or the award-winning beach — worry-free. The grounds and rooms are already stunning, but Thom Felicia is giving the property a face-lift, so I can’t wait to see the new look and rekindle the romance."
Soho House Berlin
WHO: Antonio Mugno, Market Manager
WHY: "I stayed at the Soho House Berlin while attending a travel conference in the city. It’s geared toward business travelers but has a fun vibe and a “no corporate attire” policy. The attention to detail is great, from the Cowshed amenities to the cookies served in the room each afternoon. The rooftop pool, bar and restaurant attract a cool crowd of international travelers and local creatives."
Captain Fairfield Inn, Kennebunkport
WHO: Cara Sweeney, Marketing Specialist
WHY: "Tucked away in the seaside town of Kennebunkport, the quaint Captain Fairfield Inn is perfect for a quiet weekend getaway. The innkeepers are super-helpful and genuinely want you to enjoy your stay, the best proof of which is the carefully prepared three-course gourmet breakfast, which includes homemade scones and fresh juices. But this is not your traditional inn: Guests receive an iPad preloaded with restaurant recommendations, and there’s Apple TV in every room. The inn is especially cozy in winter, as most rooms have fireplaces."
Zamas Hotel, Tulum
WHO: April Ellis, Associate Photo Editor
WHY: "With an eco-chic vibe and super-friendly staff, Zamas Hotel in Tulum is the place to unplug. It’s a no-frills escape that encourages relaxation with a great sense of seclusion. It’s also the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the regions treasures: cenotes, Mayan ruins, pristine beaches and the bioreserve — not to mention shopping for artwork by local artisans. But location aside, the expansive wraparound deck is ideal for sunbathing and siestas in the low-slung hammocks. The guestrooms have super-comfy beds that come with jaw-on-the-floor views of the cerulean Caribbean Sea. And the open-air, toes-in-the-sand restaurant, ¡Que Fresco!, serves up the fiercest margaritas and freshest off-the-boat ceviche and fish tacos in all of Tulum."
Lake Placid Lodge, New York
WHO: Leigh Crandall, Managing Editor
WHY: "The Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York are some of the most beautiful in the U.S., and Lake Placid Lodge is set right in the heart of it all. The lodge has a very clubby, cozy vibe to it. There’s plenty to do year-round, but one of my favorite times to visit is winter. The hotel offers snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating and ice fishing, and guests are just a half-hour drive from Whiteface Mountain, which has the largest vertical drop of any mountain on the eastern seaboard. In the evening they have bonfires by the lake with hot chocolate and s’mores, or you can cozy up in your own cabin with views of the lake. One must-do while you’re there: a visit to the Olympic Center, where you can actually go on runs down the bobsled and toboggan tracks, or go for a dogsled ride along Mirror Lake."
Belmond Charleston Place
WHO: Lindsey Goldstein, Senior Market Manager
WHY: "The Belmond Charleston Place is the perfect place to stay for a Charleston newbie or a Southern city veteran. It’s ideally located in the heart of downtown, so we were within walking distance of King Street, where we ate killer fried oysters and perused the quaint boutiques. The rooms are extremely spacious and dressed with the traditional decor you came to Charleston for. One of my favorite things about the hotel was the true Southern hospitality, which is clearly emphasized by the thoughtful and energetic staff, who were always eager to offer Charleston recommendations. A few tips: Don’t leave the hotel without taking a dip in the saltwater pool, which has a retractable glass ceiling and is heated year-round, or enjoying a cocktail at the Thoroughbred Club, which has a pianist most nights."
Forty1 North, Newport
WHO: Kara DeJesus, Online Marketing Specialist
WHY: "Forty1 North is the quintessential New England getaway. There’s no true front desk, but every guest is greeted by the staff as if they were an old friend and shown to their room, which feels like a home away from home. The guestrooms feature a calming, neutral color palette, and water views and fireplaces make Forty1 North a great place to visit year-round. Although you’ll be tempted to never leave your room, Forty1 North’s ideal location is withing walking distance of many restaurants and bars; head to Christy’s and enjoy a delicious cucumber martini paired with swing seating — you’re pretty much guaranteed a fun night. The next morning, soak up the alcohol with brunch at the hotel; the food (think crab cakes with poached eggs and creamy saffron bechamel) is as impressive as the views."
Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos
WHO: Andrew Skwarek, Senior Producer
WHY: "Parrot Cay checks all the bucket list hotel boxes: It’s on a private island, celebs own real estate here, and some accommodations come with a private plunge pool. But it’s the service that makes this a once-in-a-lifetime stay. We had a thoughtful 24-7 butler who popped a bottle of champagne when we arrived and delivered breakfast outside so we could maximize our pool time. Your room feels like a self-contained resort, right down to the near-deserted stretch of sand out front and the spa-like bathroom, which comes with eucalyptus, geranium, lavender and peppermint scented toiletries; some even have private outdoor showers. But every night we were happy to venture out to the bar for a few killer ginger mojitos."
Kahala Hotel & Resort, Honolulu
WHO: Sabine Van Vlerken, Director, CRM
WHY: "I traveled to Honolulu for a friend’s wedding and stayed at the Kahala Hotel & Resort. It’s a beautiful oceanfront resort that’s elegant but never stuffy or over-the-top. The service is the best I’ve seen anywhere — everyone was super-friendly and accommodating. The people at the front desk even went out of their way to help me with my children by suggesting things I might need during my stay. And you can to swim with dolphins — right at the hotel!"
Soho Beach House, Miami
WHO: Stephan Eberhart, Senior Market Manager
WHY: "Once I check into the Soho Beach House I don’t want to leave. It’s got everything your heart desires: a beach club, tiki bar, sceney rooftop pool, swoon-worthy gym and spa, and an always delicious restaurant, Cecconi’s. The intimate vibe at the hotel makes you feel as though you’re part of one big family, and I’ve never not made a friend. Its location in Mid-Beach makes it close enough to the action, but also removed enough to feel away from it all. The courteous and personal service (from the valet to the house manager) makes this hotel a destination in itself."
