Built in 1910 by the son of President Ulysses S. Grant, this grand 11-story Beaux Arts Gaslamp gem was completely restored in 2006 for a lovely San Diego stay. Guest rooms all have 9-foot ceilings, plush wool carpets, ornate moldings, custom furniture, Italian linens and Native American artwork. Be on the lookout for images of the Evening Primrose, the tribal flower and a symbol of life to the entire Kumeyaay Nation who now own the hotel. Versions of the flower appear in the lobby, bronze banister of the Broadway staircase, the intricate patterns lining the Spanish tiles of the Celestial Ballroom, original plaster ceilings of the Crystal Ballroom and the molding of the Chaffee Court.
