Even the most jaded New Yorkers couldn't help but gush over the French-inspired Jacques Garcia interiors, historic Beaux-Arts façade, and hip bar and restaurant when this luxe property opened in 2012. The sexy, low-lit interiors have a hushed Old World glamour, with Merlot velvet drapes, tassled sconces, and ornate marble fireplaces. Garcia drew inspiration from his childhood flat in Paris when designing the 168 apartment-like guest rooms—think reclaimed maple floors, antique Heriz rugs, and wall hangings (black-and-white French photographs; record sleeves) found in vintage shops.
