Miami’s Hottest New Hotels

Real estate developer Alan Faena tapped none other than film director Baz Luhrman and his wife, award-winning costumer Catherine Martin, to design his first Miami hotel. The renovated 1940s property is set on an oceanfront stretch of South Beach and seriously delivers on the wow-factor. Inside, the no-holds-barred, cinematic interiors feature outsized surrealist murals, intricate floral wallpapers, seashell-encrusted columns, and sculptures by contemporary art-world provocateur Damien Hirst.

Rusticity and luxury are rarely so artfully matched. Like other 1 Hotels, this one-year-old oceanfront property is awash in fawn-hued reclaimed wood, organic white cotton, marble, and other natural materials that join together to create into a soothing, breezy atmosphere. The brand is known for its eco- friendly practices, which include triple-filtered tap water, hemp-blend Keetsa mattresses, and Tesla electric to shuttle guests around Miami Beach.

On the white sands of peaceful North Beach, the recently spruced-up Carillon Hotel & Spa (formerly Canyon Ranch) is one the area's few dedicated wellness resorts. Its 70,000-square-foot spa and fitness center- billed as the largest in South Florida- offers a dizzying array of treatments and classes, as well as a thermal circuit that includes a steam room, dry sauna, and a menthol-scented igloo to cool the body. With a prime location on Collins Avenue, a chic beachy decor and friendly atmosphere, the new Hall ticks most of our boxes. Housed in a remodeled Art Deco hotel, the interiors ooze casual West Coast vibes with hints of tropical modernism. Just look to Sunny’s, the beach bar-inspired restaurant by Top Chef alum and avid surfer Spike Mendelsohn; and Campton Yard, an outdoor hangout and cocktail bar anchored by a massive banyan tree.

Beautifully reimagined by Sixty Hotels, the Nautilus was originally designed in the 1950’s by Morris Lapidus, the architect responsible for some of Miami’s most glamorous midcentury hotels. Today, this Collins Avenue landmark displays a balanced mix of retro style---just look to velour sofas and potted palm trees--and contemporary comforts. Behind the spacious lobby, there's an outdoor adult playground with a saltwater pool surrounded by cabanas, an alfresco bar, and a lawn strewn with wicker hammocks facing the beach.

When it opened earlier this year, EAST, Miami added a much-needed dose of cool to the city’s Brickell district, known for its glassy office towers and suit-and-tie attitude. Inspired by Feng Shui and biogeometry, the hotel has modern interiors dominated by sculptural shapes and neutral hues courtesy of New York-based design firm Clodagh. Newly relaunched as The Confidante, the former Thompson Miami Beach is as good as ever. Minimalist yet colorful interiors pay tribute to Miami’s Art Deco heritage, with 363 rooms furnished with wooden platform beds, seafoam-green credenzas, and graphically patterned rugs. Spend your afternoons at the buzzy outdoor area, dubbed The Backyard, which includes two heated pools surrounded by brightly striped cabanas, a tropical garden, and access to a powdery stretch of private beach.

Spread over four historic Art Deco buildings in South Beach, the new Washington Park Hotel is a stylish boutique property with a throwback look and youthful, creative vibe. Rooms feature streamlined wood and leather furniture set against gray walls; bathrooms are stocked with Beekman 1802 products made from fresh goat milk (yes, you read that right). Later this year, a much-anticipated outpost of New York's Employee’s Only bar and restaurant opens at the hotel. If it's anything like the Manhattan location, we're sold.

One of the only boutique hotels in Downtown Miami’s business district, the new Langford occupies a historic Beaux-Arts building once known as the Miami National Bank. Along with perfectly preserved 1920s details like marble walls and brass doors, the hotel’s interiors feature wainscotting, tufted sofas, gilded lamps and oak herringbone floors as part of its Jazz Age-inspired design. At lunchtime, locals flock to PB Station just outside the lobby, a restaurant modeled after a fin de siècle train station offering American classic like lobster rolls and dry-aged cowboy steaks.

The latest arrival to Miami’s increasingly dynamic downtown scene is Atton, a sleek hotel with a gleaming white lobby, comfortable rooms done up in blond wood, a rooftop pool with sweeping views of the surrounding cityscape and two stylish dining venues. Expect Peruvian classics like ceviche, tiradito and anticucho at Lima restaurant, while UVA Lobby Bar offers an extensive selection of South American wines.
