Dream Hollywood

The Dream New York is no stranger to celebrities (we’re looking at you Leonardo DiCaprio), so it was only a matter of time for the brand to follow them back to LA. Opening in March, the 178-room Los Angeles hotel will have postcard-worthy views of the Hollywood sign and West Coast outposts of Big Apple hotspots Tao and Beauty & Essex. The real star of the show will be the 11,000-square-foot rooftop with a pool and Avenue, a club inside a glass and metal greenhouse. Inspired by the architects who created the iconic mid-century residences of the surrounding Hollywood Hills (John Lautner, Richard Neutra), the design offers a modern nod to the 60s with a emphasis on bringing the outside in.

The James West Hollywood-Sunset

The sophisticated older brother of the Dream opens just a month later and a bit further west. Playing off the hues of the Hollywood Hills, the San Gabriel Mountains and the ocean, the luxe minimalism will allow the floor-to-ceiling West Hollywood views to shine through. Cabanas topped in macramé-inspired canopies surround a sexy rooftop pool, and the hotel will eventually have five food and beverage concepts, including a new restaurant from Miami James Beard Award–winning chef Michael Schwartz.

Hotel Indigo Los Angeles Downtown

LA is so much more than the celebs and the beach. And the renaissance of downtown proves it. That’s why we’re so excited for this 18-story, 350-room debut. Here, the Hirsch Bender interiors celebrate all of our favorite things about the city, from La Fiesta de las Flores (the downtown precursor to the Pasadena Rose Parade) to nearby Chinatown, and Prohibition-era speakeasies to the start of the motion picture industry. Also on deck? A large swimming pool and patio, a sky-high cocktail lounge and a slick restaurant.

Mama Shelter

Mama Shelter's oh-so-hip Hollywood roof has already seen the likes of Beyonce and Jay Z, so we’d say this Parisian newcomer has already made it big in the City of Angels. We love the playful LA design references throughout, from pops of sky blue and a bold yellow that splits the difference between Cali sunshine and neon, to tiles inspired by the city’s Spanish architecture and saddle blankets referencing Mexican textiles. Though the first floor’s French-American restaurant is a blast, the real scene is on the roof where pretty people toast to the Technicolor sunset over the Hollywood sign while sipping pitchers of sangria.

Hotel Figueroa

A group of saucy dames opened this YWCA hotel in the 1920s to cater to a growing class of professional women. After nearly a century in operation, the Moroccan-inspired beauty was due for a makeover. The new design strips out the kitsch in order to let the building’s gorgeous architecture shine through. But the real gem here is the patio tucked in a downtown oasis complete with an outdoor fireplace and a stunning geometric tiled pool.

Freehand Los Angeles

Big city dreams dashed by a struggling actress budget? This classic tale is true no more thanks to the new wave of high-design hostels popping up around the world. And LA is next on the list. Opening in March in a once-abandoned 1920s building, the Freehand will ooze groovy 70s cool thanks to handwoven textiles, vintage oil paintings and Mexican saddle blankets. Stay with your whole crew in a shared room with bunkbeds or keep it private in a loft-style suite. Expect a buzzy rooftop outpost of the brand’s James Beard-nominated Broken Shaker cocktail bar and a restaurant inspired by the multi-culti flavors of LA.

The Kinney

With the influx of tech companies, the area around Venice Beach has come to be known as Silicon Beach. And this Los Angeles hotel could easily be their clubhouse. Rooms surround a hangout area known as The Quad with ping pong tables, a fire pit and lounge chairs. The atmosphere is super social thanks to weekly beach cruiser bike tours, food truck hopping and bar crawls. In the rooms, midcentury-inspired furniture and lighting lend a retro vibe while wall murals nod to the area’s street art culture.

Nobu Ryokan Malibu

It’s hard to imagine a more exclusive hideaway than this long-in-the-making Malibu resort by celeb chef Nobu Matsuhisa. Perched above the postcard-perfect sand of Carbon Beach, the 18-room resort will be equal parts Cali-modernism and Asian minimalism. Inspired by Japanese ryokans (traditional inns often with hot springs), every element of the design is meant to be in tune with the area’s natural beauty, from oceanfront teak soaking tubs to lofty skylights, shoji screens to earthy textiles. Obviously, food will play a big role here, whether it’s delivered via room service or eaten among the waterfront Japanese gardens of the celeb-studded restaurant.

The Mayfair Hotel

The historic Mayfair Hotel was also ready for a facelift. The original site of the Oscars after-party, it’s set to make a comeback thanks to well-priced rooms decked out in Art Deco grandeur. But this newly renovated beauty feels thoroughly modern too thanks to art by LA icons like Shepard Fairey. Next up? The hotel plans to open a gym, outdoor restaurant and bar, plus a pool.
