Introducing Our Tastemakers: Michaela Trimble
Here at Jetsetter, we’re always on the lookout for hot new hotels, buzzy new restaurants and bars, and off-the-beaten-path destinations to share with you. While we have a crew of dedicated writers and editors doing just that, we’ve now also tapped some tuned-in tastemakers—so be on the lookout for their contributions to our magazine, Instagram, and more. Below, we hear from Michaela Trimble, a Florida-based travel writer and photographer whose travels have taken her from Chile to Jordan and everywhere in between.
A Brooklyn-based writer and editor, Chelsea's work has appeared in Matador Network, The Huffington Post, the TripAdvisor blog, and more. When not planning her next trip, you'll usually find her drinking way too much iced coffee (always iced—she’s from New England) or bingeing a Netflix original series.

What are your favorite places in the world?
There’s no place on Earth I love more than the high-altiplano intersection of Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia. I’ve been to the Arctic, Antarctica, and everywhere in the middle, and nowhere is as wildly refreshing and totally inexplicable. It’s an incredibly harsh mountainous and desert terrain that’s all but inhospitable: chinchillas scurry across gravel rock beds, vicunyas race down mountains, and flamingos graze salty lagoons. I’ve traveled here several times, and I always go back. I don’t know a land more reverential than this.

What’s your favorite hotel?
I tend to prefer luxury adventures, so lodges near the outdoors are my favorite hotels. A few I love include Arctic Haven Wilderness Lodge on Ennandai Lake in the Canadian Barren Lands; Awasi Atacama in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile; and The Vines Resort & Spa in Mendoza, Argentina.

What are your carry-on essentials?
I never board a plane without my self-made wellness kit. Before every trip, I mix and match a selection of my favorite essential oils and create my own roll-on scent (I live for a kukui nut oil, palo santo, cedar wood, and ylang-ylang mix). I also pack a disposable toothbrush, an Ursa Major Face Wipe, and lapis lazuli face oil by Herbivore Botanicals. Taking a moment for self-care feels so luxurious when you’re thousands of feet above the world.
What’s the one fashion item you always travel with?
I couldn’t imagine going anywhere without sunglasses and black skinny jeans. Sunglasses are always useful—when hiking a trail, kayaking on the water, or even snagging a morning coffee before I wash my face! I also find black skinny jeans extremely universal. I could wear them for an evening hike or dress them up with a blazer for dinner in the city. They just always work.
Where are you going next?
Next week, I leave for a hiking, cycling, and kayaking trip through Cuba. I come home for a few days, then I go to Africa for an entire month. I’ll be in Botswana, Zambia, and Madagascar.

The biggest travel blunder you’ve faced?
Getting sick! There’s really nothing worse than a health lapse while on the road. I had one in Europe last year, and I was on a super-tight schedule. I couldn’t manage to get well. I navigated doctors (and languages!) across France, Spain, and Italy. It was crazy!
