Below, we hear from Christina Pérez, a Brooklyn-based travel, food, and lifestyle writer whose work has taken her from the Yucatán to Indonesia, and countless places in between.

What are your favorite places in the world?
Anywhere with palm trees and surf-able waves.
What’s your favorite hotel?
That’s tough. I have a couple, but I particularly love really small, thoughtfully designed hotels: Sparrows Lodge in Palm Springs, Lo Sereno in Troncones, Drift in San Jose del Cabo, and Nest in Tulum. I also really love Hotel Grand Tremezzo in Lake Como—it is not a small one, but it is so romantic and lovely and the service is so amazing that it still manages to feel very intimate despite the large scale.
What are your carry-on essentials?
I am paranoid about getting dry airplane skin so I always bring a little kit filled with heavy-duty moisturizing products: Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Coconut Face Mist, Avene Soothing Moisture Mask, Akt Therapy Eye Balm, and Diptyque Eau Rose Hand Creme. Also, a silk eye mask, a couple of pairs of headphones, a giant bottle of water, and my journal. I love writing on flights—there’s just something about being in between places that makes reflection easier.
What’s the one fashion item you always travel with?
A swimsuit. No matter where I’m going—even if it’s somewhere cold! It is the one thing I truly would hate to be without— it would be so sad to miss the opportunity to swim in a really great pool should the opportunity arise. Right now, my favorite suit is a yellow one-piece by Bower.
Where are you going next?
I have a surf trip planned to Punta Mita, Mexico. I am staying at the W and I’m excited because not only does it look beautiful but there are apparently a couple of really fun breaks right in front of the hotel.
The biggest travel blunder you’ve faced?
The most embarrassing one was fairly recently, actually. I was on my way to Zihuatanejo with a connection in Mexico City. When I arrived at the Mexico City airport, I was so excited to be there that I decided to celebrate with a margarita while waiting for my next flight’s gate to be announced. The bar was popping—they were playing these amazing, retro music videos on the televisions and the waiters were dancing along to the music. I sort of just got swept up in the whole hilarious airport bar experience. Needless to say, I totally missed the announcement of the gate and my flight. I had to spend the next 6 hours trying to convince the AeroMexico ticketing agents to reissue me a new connecting flight. Thankfully they eventually took mercy on me, but in the meantime I learned two very important life lessons: Never celebrate the beginning of your vacation until you’ve actually arrived at your final destination, and never navigate an unfamiliar airport while slightly under the influence—especially an airport that’s notoriously difficult to get around when sober!
