Easy Holiday Decorating and Entertaining Ideas

Holiday decorating can cause even the most expert hostesses to reach for the spiced eggnog. How to deal? We turned to the experts — Lauren Buxbaum Gordon and Sasha Adler, Design Directors at Nate Berkus Associates—who shared their most foolproof DIY decorating and party-throwing tips, as well as their favorite money-saving holiday resource. Cheers!

What’s new and trendy in holiday décor?

"Classic and timeless elements are always on-trend in our book, but it’s always fun to incorporate something unexpected, as well. This year, we decorated the Christmas tree for the Loews Regency New York, and paired traditional gilded ornaments with a snow-white peacock for a fashion-forward look."

How can people reproduce that look at home?

"Focus on incorporating natural elements such as greenery, branches and florals, then turn to fashion to add pizzazz. Our Creative Director, Lauren Allan, is using her gold cuff bracelets as napkin rings at her holiday table this year."

Love it! Any creative ideas for centerpieces?

"Make your own table runner by stringing together garlands and branches, and add in flowers and berries for additional detail. The warm glow from votives is the icing on the cake."

How can you dress up a bar cart for the occasion?

"Incorporate accessories like candles and picture frames to break up the bottles and glassware. And don’t forget to pre-mix a signature drink so you won’t have to take time away from your guests to prepare each drink to order."

Any other tips and tricks for holiday decorating?

"We like to hand out gift bags as the party ends. A great idea is to fill a beautiful mug with hot cocoa mix, peppermint sticks and homemade marshmallows, then put it in a burlap sack tied with twin and berries. It’s a little something that will keep thinking about how great your party was for weeks to come."
