It’s all about timing.

First of all, think about your travel dates. “Most people probably associate November and December with holiday travel, which is notoriously expensive,” Stewart says. “But there are a lot of great deals available on the dates before and after those holidays when fewer people are flying. If you’re on the hunt for a great warm-weather fare, these are the dates to search.”

Look close by.

You don’t necessarily need to travel far away to find that warm getaway you’re dreaming about. “Depending on your departure city, you can find reliably inexpensive deals to destinations in Florida, Mexico, and even the Caribbean,” Stewart says.

Spend a weekend in Puerto Rico.

Consider Puerto Rico during the week before the Christmas travel rush, Stewart advises. Flights from NYC to San Juan, PR can currently be booked for $260 on Delta.

How about the West Coast? “From the Northeast, flights to Southern California are often lower for off-peak dates in December and November,” Stewart reports.

Hello, Hollywood.

If you’re coming from Boston, keep Los Angeles in mind, too. Stewart found a JetBlue flight currently listed at $236 nonstop for travel in early December.

Cuba is calling!

“Need to swim off Thanksgiving dinner? Flights from DC to Havana can go for under $300,” says Stewart.
