The Best Eye Creams with SPF (Yes, They Do Exist!)
Eye cream spiked with SPF is a really smart thing to wear year round. After all, the thin skin around the eyes is especially susceptible to wrinkles, dark spots, and other photoaging damage from the sun. That being said, wearing SPF eye cream is extra smart while traveling, when you are more likely to be outdoors exploring a new city, zipping down a ski slope, or swimming on a beach. So if you ask us, eye creams with SPF (along with sunscreens for the body and face) are as essential to travel as polarized sunglasses, a multi-use scarf, and a sleep mask.
We’ve found nine eye creams specifically designed to protect delicate eye areas with great daytime ingredients, such as synthetic sunscreens, physical sun blockers, and natural antioxidants, which help to stop the havoc wrought by free-radical activity. Read on for the best eye creams with SPF to add to cart—then to dopp kit—and turn a blind eye no more.
Supergoop Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Cream
With UV-targeting sunscreens making up nearly one fifth of the formulation, this Supergoop product delivers the some of the strongest broad-spectrum protection of any eye cream on the market. Zinc oxide (a physical blocker) and octinoxate (a chemical one) work together to filter UVA and UVB rays, preventing sunburn in the short term and things like age spots and collagen degradation over time. Skin-conditioning glycerin and sunflower seed oil offset any drying effects, and mica adds a bit of a glow.
Mineral Fusion SPF 16 Brightening Eye Cream
For green-beauty lovers who’d rather not dab chemicals anywhere near their eyes, this vegan pick is a godsend. Its base is a moisturizing blend of vegetable glycerin, coconut oil, and shea butter, to which mineral SPF, soothing aloe, dark-circle-reducing cucumber are added. Loads of antioxidants, like rosehip oil and gingko biloba, provide extra protection against free-radical damage and mica makes for a pretty light-reflecting quality.
Dermalogica Total Eye Care with SPF 15
A sunscreen eye cream that’s not unpleasantly sticky? Yes, please. Dermalogica’s smooth and lightweight formula glides over -- and doesn’t tug at -- the delicate under-eye and eye contour. The physical SPF is laced with hydrating glycerin and lactic acid, a mild anti-ager that’s suitable for sensitive skin.
Skinceuticals Physical Eye UV Defense SPF 50
A big complaint about both eye creams and sunscreens is the goop factor. This pick has an airy, mousse-like texture with zero tack, and a barely-there tint that blends with most skin types. The clay-colored formula absorbs quickly -- not an easy feat when you’re talking about sunscreens -- to a velvety dry finish that won’t slip and slide around.
Origins A Perfect World Age-Defense With SPF 20
SPF can feel gummy under concealer and makeup, but that’s not the case for this mineral sunscreen eye cream. Packed with shea butter and anti-aging plant extracts, the oil-free product goes on light and easy, and helps to quell sun damage, minimize fine lines, and hydrate skin cells. Sold!
Murad Essential-C Eye Cream SPF PA++
There’s a reason why vitamin C is one of skin care’s most in-demand ingredients. It’s been successfully proven to rev up collagen production and nix the creation of pigment. Here, it’s joined by moisturizing a trio of chemical sunscreens (octisalate, homosalate, avobenzone), illipe butter, collagen-building rice amino acids (the more collagen-encouraging ingredients, the better), and the antioxidant vitamin A to form one powerhouse of an eye cream. The product sinks in fast and stays in place all day, working to smooth fine lines and wrinkles, brighten sun spots, and provide hydration.
Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 34 Sunscreen
Shiseido’s SPF eye cream stands up to the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays, and does so without the stinging, redness, or irritation that often flare up as soon as sunscreen gets near the eye area. It takes a bit of time to absorb, but doesn’t interfere with makeup or cause it to migrate throughout the day. Bonus: the cream has a slight illuminating effect.
La Prairie Anti-Aging Eye Cream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 15
Cult favorite La Prairie is known for its very glamourous, very indulgent take on luxury skin care. The classic Swiss brand’s wrinkle-fighting eye cream has a satisfyingly plush texture that you’d want from a triple-digit beauty product, one that taps in easily and dries within a few seconds. The shea butter-based cream contains vitamin E and black tea extract, which softens and brightens, and ursolic acid, which boosts the pliancy of skin and wards off wrinkles. We have to dock points for the jar packaging that leads daily air exposure and thus quicker ingredient deterioration, and the presence of horsetail extract, which can be an irritant.
Lancaster Eye Contour Cream SPF 50+
Rare is the sunscreen that blocks not just UV rays, but also infrared and visible light. Lancaster’s high-tech (and fragrance-free!) eye cream does just that -- works to block all forms of light and radiation. Think of it as Captain America’s Vibranium shield in real-world eye-cream form. When it comes to full-throttle sun defense for the eye area, we’ve yet to find a match.
