Check Out the World’s Craziest, Over-the-Top Suites

Like most genres in the travel category (fast cars, personal yachts), there’s luxury, and then there’s LUXURY. We’re not saying you should spend $20,000 on an overnight hotel stay, but if you can (or just happen to hang with high-rollers), these are the places you want to book.

Royal Suite at The Plaza, New York

It’s hard to top bedding down in one of New York City’s most luxurious suites, in one of its most iconic landmark hotels. This three-bedroom respite, accessed by private elevator, seems plucked from the court of Louis XV. There's a living room with sumptuous velvet sofas and a grand piano, a 12-seat dining room for royal entertaining, and a master bedroom overlooking Fifth Avenue with its own powder room—not to mention a gym, a chef's kitchen, and spacious ensuite bathrooms tiled in marble mosaic with gold-plated faucets and heated floors. White-glove butler service ensures you never have to lift a finger—unless, of course, there's a maestro in the group itching to play a few stanzas from Gershwin.

Ritz-Carlton Suite at The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong

Try not to get vertigo: you’ll (literally) feel on top of the world in this 4,000-square-foot aerie 117 floors above downtown Kowloon, which features 270-degree views of Victoria Harbor and Hong Kong Island. As part of the package deal, guests are whisked from the airport by chauffeured limo or Rolls Royce (their choice) to the highest hotel in the world, where a personal butler leads the rest of the stay. Pampering here is next-level, from daily spa massages for two to getting your pillow cases and bathrobes monogrammed for the occasion.

Penthouse Suite at Rome Cavalieri

There are penthouse suites, and there is this Penthouse Suite. Not surprising, given it occupies one of Rome’s most opulent hotels, which also happens to house one of the best restaurants in all of Italy, La Pergola. Like the masterpieces inside the Vatican and the Borghese, priceless artifacts rule each space here, from an original Warhol “Dollar Sign” series to bathroom taps made of Swarovski crystals to the Karl Lagerfeld sofa that once resided in the designer’s own Parisian home. There’s a hydromassage tub by the bed with window views, but we prefer heading up the staircase to the roof terrace (complete with its own solarium and gazebo) and taking a dip in the Jacuzzi while St. Peter’s Dome glows in the distance.

Royal Bridge Suite at Atlantis, The Palm Dubai

"Extravagance" is a byword for Dubai these days, and we'd expect nothing less from the almost 10,000-square-foot Royal Bridge Suite at the Atlantis. Three bedrooms fit up to six adults and three children, but we like to dream of using it just for two. There isn’t enough room to list everything this mini-palace comes with, but here’s just a taste: sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and Dubai skyline (a given), a separate guarded entrance, private cabanas at the pool and beach, two complimentary personal training sessions, head-neck-shoulder rubs in your own massage room, 22-karat gold bathroom amenities, and 24-hour access to a dedicated team of butlers and chefs.

The Fleming Villa at GoldenEye Hotel & Resort, Jamaica

Is living a day like 007 on your bucket list? Guests of the five-bedroom Fleming Villa at GoldenEye can sit at the very same desk where Ian Fleming penned all 14 of his James Bond spy novels, peruse the garden where he entertained Hollywood royalty like Noël Coward and Errol Flynn, snorkel his favorite reef off the villa's own private stretch of beach, or catch a glimpse of the author’s gardener, Ramsey Dacosta, who still tends to the property.

Ty Warner Mansion at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, Mexico

We hardly thought resort owner Ty Warner could top his Four Seasons Penthouse in New York—until he debuted this stunner in downtown Los Cabos in collaboration with famed architect and designer Robert Couturier. Need convincing? Here's what's included: two master suites with their own private saunas and steam rooms, a beachfront infinity pool, a $25,000 Assouline book library, a tequila tasting room, a staff of seven (including an on-call driver and a private chef), a "Great Room" featuring a reflecting pool and retractable glass roof, and, upon request, a customizable fireworks display that you can set off whenever the mood strikes. Talk about making a statement.

Presidential Suite at the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe, St. Petersburg

We’re suckers for butler service and décor so lavish it makes our wallets weep, but if a room doesn’t come with a secret passageway, really, what’s the point? The Belmond Grand Hotel Europe understands. Its Presidential suite, the largest suite in St. Petersburg, is something of a book-lover’s fantasy: along with a gold-leaf ceiling and majestic lobby, there's a 500-tome library stocked with Russian classics by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Pushkin, as well as—the clincher—a secret bookcase that leads to a second bedroom.

Raffles Suite at Raffles Istanbul

What do you get when you merge two continents and two seas? A place from which to drink it all in. Guests arrive by private helicopter to a bottle of champagne at the Raffles Suite at the Raffles Istanbul. After tearing yourself away from your private terrace view, feel free to take advantage of the fitness room, entertainment center, or study, where personalized stationery is waiting for penning those important letters home. And don't bother wasting time unpacking or figuring out reservations—let your butler and chef take care of that for you. Not yet mentioned, but on the docket: couples’ massages, a 30-minute private yacht tour, Performing Arts Center tickets (based on availability), and serious bragging rights.

Villa 20 at Amanzoe, Greece

Planning the ultimate getaway for you and your 19 closest friends? Amanzoe has just the space for you: sequestered on four hillside acres in Porto Heli is its all-new nine-bedroom, six-level villa. Spread yourselves out among its whopping six pools, admire its large-scale outdoors art sculptures, head down to the sand and your very own beach cabana, schedule sunrise yoga on the front platform (or an afternoon massage in the private 1,800-square-foot spa) or take dinner at the alfresco long table overlooking manicured gardens and—for the time being, at least—your vast, personal estate.

Grand Riad at the Royal Mansour, Marrakesh

It should come as no surprise that this three-level, 19,375-square-foot residence is considered its own hotel within the Royal Mansour, which sits smack in the middle of Marrakesh's buzzing medina. It's so exclusive, you need a password just to look it up online—but we've got the scoop: there are four bedrooms, a private library, an underground cinema, a hammam, and a gym, not to mention two swimming pools (in case you’re bored of just one), a split-level terrace with a retractable roof (yes, it’s necessary), and more than your fair share of living and dining areas. Oh, and let's not forget the dedicated staff including chefs, watchmen, housekeepers, and butlers, who are at the ready to cater to your every need.

Price Tag: from $40,000 a night.
