Overview

Towering five-star sleep in Ningbo’s bustling center with four restaurants and a sublime spa

The Lowdown

Located in Wanda Plaza, Ningbo’s bustling shopping and entertainment center, this five-star property blends Sofitel’s signature French style with traditional Chinese design elements. Soaring marble columns and a striking chandelier provide a dramatic entrance in the lobby and bold red silks feature in the rooms. All 290 guestrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to the city or the gardens, comfy MyBeds and glass-walled bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. Kick back in the Touch Spa’s heated indoor pool or indulge in an authentic Chinese massage. On the food front, pick from four restaurants, including Koko for teppanyaki and sushi and Lavish for fancy French dining. Tuck into a Parisian high tea in the sip a top-notch wine at the Le Club bar.

In the Area

Ningbo is rich in ancient architecture. In the old district, you can visit Tianyi Pavilion (East Asia’s biggest ancient private library), the Drum Tower (built in AD 821), Tianfeng Pagoda (the tallest building in ancient Ningbo, with seven stories above ground and seven stories below), as well as the 1,400-year-old Moon Lake. The city is famed for a variety of light dishes, such as rice dumplings, steamed buns and cakes stuffed with red bean or lotus nut paste. Try them at Gangyagou, a snack bar in business since 1926. Being a port, Ningbo is the starting point of China’s ancient Maritime Silk Road, which led to Africa centuries ago. Silk boutiques are everywhere in the city; bargain hard.

Feeling a little tired -
Reviewed 6 days ago

I've traveled throughout China multiple times and visited many stunning hotels.

During it's day this hotel was grand, but unfortunately it's time has pasted.

The rooms are looking their age, the carpets worn and wallpaper bubbling.

The bed is comfortable and well appointed but the rooms are tired.

Flying in from Xi'an the previous hotel spoiled me both in surroundings and breakfast.

The Sofitel breakfast was poorly lacking and the quality was missing. In Xi'an I'd to waiting patiently for the breakfast buffet to open, like Christmas morning, as a child.

In the case of the Sofitel I navigated the breakfast buffet because it was included.

The decor at the buffet was actually creepy and had a series of scattered river rock with what looked like white crystal power as a backdrop. It was wasn't appetizing to look at.

During a request for help with my room air conditioning someone at the front desk was extremely helpful, said he would send some one to fix it and offered a discount on a massage.

When I got back to the room later that night the tempature was at the same level as before which made sleeping difficult.

I called down to hear that there was nothing they could do and the main system regulated the temperature.

I knew this was BS put decided not to proceed as I had only 2 nights left.

The massage was awesome and the talented lady who administered the treatment used Google Translate to ask late in the massage "Would you like to be massaged anywhere else?" I suggested my head... the one with the ears :-).

Overall the experience was average and unfortunately I would not return based on the tired feel of the room, the disappointing breakfast buffet and a warm room.

Excellent stay for international business travel
Reviewed 3 months ago

My recent international business travels required a two-night stay in Ningbo and our vendor arranged rooms at Sofitel. Upon arrival, the place was magnificent in the grand entry. Check-in was quick. The room was very clean, modern and large. The bed allowed good sleeping and the bath was very accommodating. The breakfast buffet had many many items to choose from, so as a westerner, I was very satisfied with the big selection. The double expresso self-service machine was very nice to use. I hope I can stay here again if the need for international travel to Ningbo arises in the future.
