How to Get There
We stayed for 1 week vacation in end of May- memorial week. Family of 3, my husband & I & our toddler daughter. This was our 2nd trip to Riviera Maya. First trip we stayed in Playa del Carmen. This trip we stayed in Merida to be closer to the ruins in Ruta Puuc. Uxmal is a must visit. I was undecided between this & hotel Intercontinental, both same price, but opted for this because of Reviews about AC system at International.
Pros: AC always worked & was cool temp, hotel does have it set at a temp & you can’t change it around, but I rather use covers if it gets cold rather than have a room that’s hot & muggy. The lobby is big & beautiful. has 2 restaurants. We had breakfast at hotel almost every morning, if your not a heavy eater (like us) no worries you can order a la carte instead of buffet. The staff is always super nice & amazingly welcoming. The valet service is free (just tip). The housekeeping always left room spotless. Hotel location is super accessible walking & driving/taxi. About 20 minutes to airport. We were going to stay at another hotel 5 minutes from airport on our last night (had a 6am flight) but we canceled & decided to add last night at Hyatt because we were so comfortable staying there. Beds are super comfy.
Cons: we had a double bed room. Was smaller than expected. No real natural light 1 very small window. Beds are full size (not queen) which I found odd for what’s supposed to be a luxury hotel & different than Hyatt’s we’ve stayed at in the states. Also the room is newly furnished but is very bare to the bones. No small table (to sit & eat if u bring or order room service). Only 1 chair in room. Only 2 drawers in room & no real tv cabinet just a wooden plain slab that looks more like a motel design. And the bathroom is small with a bad design because I’m a slim person & I still had to suck it in just to get into shower/glass door hits toilet. They should have used sliding doors or a curtain instead.
Anyways the location, cleanliness, new furnishings, working AC, attentive staff made up for the cons & maybe I would consider hotel next time we go to Merida because we do plan to go again since we didn’t get to do everything on our list. But if your big about size of room/beds (like I am) then this is not the hotel for you. Unless you book a king bed room, but if you need 2 beds then that wouldn’t b an option.
Incredibly nice and attentive staff, including an early check in after a red-eye flight. Restaurant is ok. Some further attention to detail needed (not cutting fruit with same knife as onions/cilantro, better quality tortillas), but the lechon was very tasty. The room is ok overall, but curtains were not long enough to over entire window leaving gaps at both ends. Additionally, it is very noisy in the 7th floor — the doors are very loud to close. It is very difficult to rest with doors slamming at all hours. Not even the super loud A/C blocks it out.
Now, the most important elements of a stay in Merida:
1) bed 2) A/C and 3) bathroom
1) bed: too hard and pillows very uncomfortable. After a day of sightseeing, comfortable rest is most important. This bed was hard and getting a good night’s sleep was not possible.
2) A/C: Merida is hot and humid, so A/C is a #1 priority for best rest. The A/C is ok when it comes to cooling, but it is SO loud that it’s twice as loud as being on an airplane. Every time it kick on, it will wake you up. So much so, you will turn the thermostat up to keep it from turning on as often as you’d really like. Plus, there is no vent in the bathroom.
3) bathroom: the lay out is bad and the mold is ridiculous. Pictures attached. Shower head is not adjustable and pressure not nearly enough.
Stayed at numerous hotels here ! I like this the best ! The beds for one are incredibly comfortable .. the rooms are large and they have CNN and FOX is n English . We liked that while watching hurricane Dorian ???????? The restaurant Spasso was just so good everyone so nice! Food yum! Ravioli with spinach is the best along with the pizzas with thin crust so good! I love Arugula and they always gave me a large bowl of it to put on my dishes!!! Thank you very much!! To everyone that works here ! Oh and the pool is perfect !
