With a neighbor like Windsor Castle, the four-star Macdonald Windsor Hotel certainly scores points for location. Sitting sharp on the main parade, the hotel overlooks the castle grounds and down through the winding streets with their quaint shops and tearooms.
The hotel itself is accommodated within an old townhouse. With a classic design and warm colors, the ambiance is both inviting and therapeutic. Think earthy browns paired with rich creams and homely fabrics, like butter-soft leathers and velvet.
As with all Macdonald hotels, the emphasis is on great service, elegant food and the fantastic location. Windsor is close to London, Ascot and Heathrow Airport, and as it’s on the border of Surrey and Hampshire, it makes for detailed exploration of the home counties surrounding London, alongside being a beautiful destination in its own right.
How to Get There
We reserved this hotel because it has a high rating on TripAdvisor; however, there were some unappealing defects, lack of professionalism of the hotel receptionist & uncleanness of toilet, which makes the hotel less recommendable.
We booked a half boarded package with the hotel, while we checked in, carried 3 large pieces of luggage, we’ve been told our room had been upgraded; however, the receptionist did not inform us that our room was down to the very end of the hall, which needed going ups and downs many stairs to get there, and she did not ask if we need extra help with our luggage, we’ve ended up dragging three pieces of heavy bags to the room ourselves. Moreover, after we checked in, the receptionist failed to mention where the lifts were and where the restaurant was for dinner and breakfast. When we tried to book the dinner at 7:00 pm, she lied about the restaurant was too full to book at that time and suggested to change to 7:30 pm, but we stuck to our original plan and requested her to find a table for us, she did. At 7:00 pm we arrived, surprisingly, the restaurant was almost empty!! We finished our dinner at 8:30 pm and saw ONLY three tables were occupied with customers.
When we reached our room and immediately found the toilet seat with some visible stains on it, which was very disgusting; also, there was no ventilation inside the bathroom.
I have to say the hotel has an excellent restaurant providing good food, the amenities of the room and the bathroom was very nice, and the valet parking service was great except the flaws as mentioned earlier.
This hotel has a small frontage, but is absolutely a great place to stay in Windsor. It opens up to a top quality hotel inside, with our room being 5 star. Getting to the hotel garage is a little tricky, but once you've done it, it is not a problem. We thoroughly recommend.
After visiting the castle, we started to look around for lunch when we saw the sign for tea here. While reading, we ended up in a conversation with the doorman Matthew. He completely sold us on stopping by for afternoon tea and really sold us on the area as well. The tea service was a great value as we seemed to get more and better quality food here and it was noticeably cheaper from other afternoon teas we have. Given its location, that is even more impressive. One of our best meals in our whole trip to England. Our server consistently checked in and we had multiple tea pots. Matthew even checked in during our meal and said hello again as we left. The service overall makes us want to stay at the hotel too.
Great hotel in a perfect location for the beautiful sights of Windsor.
Hotel was lovely, clean and well presented. The staff were approachable, helpful and knowledgable.
Our room was a great size, with not such a great view, but the shower was walk in & very powerful. Bed was huge and pillows fabulous.
The parking is a must - a welcome treat after a long drive to have your car parked for you & then returned at the end, with your bags already in the boot!
The food in the restaurant was delicious. We paid for an evening meal as part of the stay deal but the menu changed for the two days which was very welcome.
My only negative is the price of the bar and drinks in the restaurant. £15 for a large glass of wine, which was an ok grape but nothing outstanding, and then a 12% service charge on top was just too much.
Just had an amazing 2 nights here. Whole place is stunning, with excellent food and service. Right in the middle of Windsor, and could see the castle from our room. I highly recommend a stay here and a visit to the Castle which is literally across the road
