With a neighbor like Windsor Castle, the four-star Macdonald Windsor Hotel certainly scores points for location. Sitting sharp on the main parade, the hotel overlooks the castle grounds and down through the winding streets with their quaint shops and tearooms.
The hotel itself is accommodated within an old townhouse. With a classic design and warm colors, the ambiance is both inviting and therapeutic. Think earthy browns paired with rich creams and homely fabrics, like butter-soft leathers and velvet.
As with all Macdonald hotels, the emphasis is on great service, elegant food and the fantastic location. Windsor is close to London, Ascot and Heathrow Airport, and as it’s on the border of Surrey and Hampshire, it makes for detailed exploration of the home counties surrounding London, alongside being a beautiful destination in its own right.
How to Get There
My partner didn't want me to write this but because it's still upsetting to this day it needed something to be said. I never accompanied my partner and son on this trip as I had to look after our dog and I'm glad I never because I don't think I could have been quiet about any of it. From the moment they walked into the hotel the service was terrible, staff had a non-caring attitude. My partner and son went to the races, they come back and had dinner then retired to the room at approximately 9pm. In the morning my partner was accused of something that he definitely didn't do, it upset him and my son. He asked to see the security recordings and was denied, the lady then said it might not have been him after all but never even apologised even though my partner and son were extremely upset by the accusation. Terrible, Terrible, Terrible!
Hotel is located directly across the street from Windsor Castle in the centre of town. Hotel has very good service and rooms are clean. Bathrooms are small with a shower/bath combo. When running the shower, at least in our room, would have water pool along side of the tub. This made a bit of a mess but easily mopped up. Beds are comfy but are double beds, so it’s a bit cramped for 2 adults.
Windsor is a delightful place to visit and a must see when in the 🇬🇧 UK.
Stayed here this weekend and it was brilliant from start to end. The service was excellent and our room (114) was spotless and very spacious. We had a great view and the bed was SO comfy. We really enjoyed the breakfast, excellent variety and great service. Couldn’t ask for a better location or staff; the Manager (Phil) went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. We will definitely be returning.
Spotlessly clean throughout.
We asked for a quiet room and were not disappointed - until our third night when a wedding party/hen-night group were allocated rooms above! Well equipped rooms and bathrooms:- tea/coffee facilities with fresh milk on demand, iron and ironing board, safety deposit box, all included.
All staff were friendly and helpful - outstanding was the Doorman, Matthew(o) who was a breath of fresh air, a mine of information and a ray of sunshine - a lovely man!
There was a good variety offered on the breakfast buffets but the hot serverys were not refreshed frequently enough - particularly fried eggs, the yokes of which were hard.
Afternoon tea at £20/person (plus £2.50 Service/person) was good value in Windsor, excellent quality and presentation, generous helpings and nicely served. The internal dining room lacks a view but it is what it is. The staff are charming and attentive.
The dinner menu was interesting if a little pricey but, disappointingly, the menu doesn’t change day to day so we only took dinner at the hotel on one evening. There are many other choices within Windsor.
Parking: From the rear service road you can access Reception via a lift: staff take your car to the underground car park. One can retrieve the car on demand - they say within 10 minutes but ours was ready to drive away in less than 5 minutes.
We like MacDonald hotels, we particularly liked this one.
We were surprised and disappointed to be presented with an additional £105 for use of the car park: we were aware there was a charge - £35/vehicle, but per vehicle per night!
This was my second visit and I was not disappointed. My lasting impression from this year and last is the wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. The bar seemed to be open 24/7. I learnt about Monkey 47. A new gin to me. And also Black Cow vodka which is made from cow's milk. Its central location opposite the castle means that it also has great views. From the valet parking to the little touches in the bedroom, I cannot recommend this hotel enough. Well done again.
