Overview

Expect total natural immersion—reef-diving, bushland hikes, bird walks—at this family-friendly hideaway, set on a palm-shaded, private isle in Queensland's Whitsundays

The Lowdown

When a category four cyclone made landfall on Airlie Beach, an aquatic Australian paradise, in 2017, it also ravaged the One&Only resort on nearby Hayman Island. After undergoing an extensive $135 million rebuild, the property has resurfaced as an Intercontinental, spruced up with a brand-new Sodashi (Sanskrit for “radiance”) spa and a three-bedroom Halo Residence among other new-and-improved facilities. Opt for a room in the Lagoon Wing, lined with lily-padded inlets and tropical garden panoramas, for direct access to the property’s infinity pool; if you’re seeking more real estate, there are eight villas with open-air private pools and terraces. Though you’ll most likely want to spend all your time wading in the celestial blue surf the Whitsundays are synonymous with. Lucky for you, the beach is a mere steps away and tailor-made for experiences like stand-up paddle-boarding and sea kayaking. Come low tide, don’t miss a guided sand flats tour for a glimpse at a shoreline that’s artfully scattered with corals, sea urchins, and shells. Once the sun sets, dine on Amalfi Coast-inspired pastas at the hotel’s trattoria or feast on Pan-Asian plates at Bam Bam, the infinity poolside joint.

In the Area

Located on the northernmost point of the Whitsundays, an idyllic archipelago of 74 islands between Queensland’s northeastern coast and the Great Barrier Reef, the resort is accessible by boat, helicopter, or private charter from Hamilton Island (direct flights to Hamilton Island are available from most of Australia’s major capital cities). The property can arrange for guided excursions to nearby attractions, which include helicopter rides over Heart Reef, an awe-inducing coral composition; a guided hike up Hill Inlet; or a day on Whitehaven Beach, whose sand is 98% pure white silica and regularly singled out for being one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
