Industrial-chic boutique with a serene plunge pool and a sleek rooftop bar overlooking Colombo's skyline

The Look

Designed by architect Sunela Jawardene, Colombo Courtyard is a pint-size urban boutique hotel with just 32 rooms and 15 suites. A welcome departure from Colombo’s big box hotels. Interiors marry recycled materials with industrial-chic design. Think uncluttered open spaces punctuated with metal art installations, sculptures and dramatic lighting. Up at the Loft Bar there is recycled furniture such as vintage tractor stools and steel roof sheets, while the Scarlet Room restaurant falls more on the cozy side, dotted with spectacular photographs of the island.

Bed & Bath

Rooms pair cement and wood furnishings with bright hues, while suites (with separate parlors) offer a bit more elbow room — plus individual iMacs. All rooms have plenty of electrical outlets and creature comforts like 42-inch flat-screen SMART TVs, cappuccino makers and plump beds, as well as quirky extras like a retro hand-operated juicer and a bowl of oranges for fresh-squeezed OJ.

The Loft Lounge Bar is a cool hangout for guests and locals, as is the rooftop Cloud Café, where you can take in the city skyline over a long drink and some pub grub. The Scarlett Room is a full-service restaurant with affordable Mediterranean/Italian fare and the pun-tastic wine cellar, Grape Expectations, pairs New World wines and tapas. There’s also the newly opened swimming pool and pool bar at the Poolside Wing, which hugs the tranquil lap pool. Sun worshipers can pull up a lounger or hop in the courtyard’s plunge pool and Jacuzzi. Or kick back with a Balinese massage or a hot stone treatment at the Amber Spa.

Quiet, cosy hotel in the heart of Colombo...

We went on for a quick family get away, and it was totally worth the money. Loved the hidden, foresty appearance, friendly staff, efficient service and delicious food. We used the pool as well. If you are dining, you can use the pool for free. Would definitely recommend for a meet up, a famiy lunch or a dine n wine!

Wonderful room, but lack of amenities

The room at Colombo Court was five stars. Spacious bed, huge bathtub, lovely decor. The location is also very good. However, much of the hotel - including the rooftop and the gym - were closed for renovations when I visited. I booked the hotel specifically because it had a gym, and after informing the staff of this, they were kind enough to let me use the treadmill. By the looks of the cluttered room the treadmill is kept in, the gym will not be functional for quite some time. If you're just looking for a nice room, I would recommend this place - just know that the majority of the amenities advertised on the website will likely be lacking.

Friendly restaurant staff

We had an overnight stay in this hotel last May 18 while my brother had a two night stay from May 17-19. We booked the airport transfer ($29) and arrived at about 11 pm. The person who welcomed us at the airport was more friendly and warm compared to the staff who welcomed us upon arrival and processed our check in. Even the driver who took us to the hotel was friendlier and shared with us the nice sites to visit in Colombo. Among the 5 hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka (Aryana, Aliya Resort and Spa, Theva Residency and Jetwing Lagoon), we did not have the same warm welcome and departure in this hotel.

The only saving grace in our short stay was the restaurant staff during breakfast who was warm and always smiling as well as the delicious Sri Lankan breakfast. There was only one other table occupied during breakfast as there were not too many guests after the Easter bombing. The room was also comfortable. It's also good to read about the hotel being eco-friendly.

Would have been nice to have been informed half the hotel was closed for renovation. It is not a 5 star property!

The saving grace was the staff who did everything in their power to make things as comfortable as possible, The manager Mohd Razzaq was wonderful. We want to thank Mohd the bell Captain who did his best.
The one restaurant that was poolside had a very limited menu and being as the food was prepared a distance from the pool where one ate it was often cold.
The electricals in the room were mostly not functioning.
I would suggest calling and asking where they are in the renovation before booking.
The front door was broken which was sliding and had to be opened manually.

Perfect boutique hotel right in the city

One of the best hotels we’ve stayed at. Rooms are luxurious, restaurant does the most amazing food, pool and facilities great. Also, small enough to be tucked away but big enough to get all the important things right. It was safe, staff were super friendly and it was great value. Will be our new home in Colombo.
