Overview

The Review

Cape Town and its environs cling to cliffs and tumbledown mountains that end abruptly in the frothy surf of the Atlantic Ocean. There are few better places to enjoy the cape’s dramatic landscape than the chic, clifftop perch of the Ambassador Hotel. A seaside getaway by virtue of its location, it has a vibe that is polished, urban and appealing to business types and couples alike.

The Ambassador offers a relaxed Cape Town experience. From the lobby to the 68 mostly sea-facing guestrooms, the look is crisp, in neutral creams and whites, set off by dark wood furnishings.{“type”:”img-inline”,”src”:”/static/images/product/properties/2754/prop-77288-1336077687-full.jpg”,”width”:”275″,”caption”:”Salt Restaurant serves fusion French-African fare in its gorgeous clifftop dining room.”} Standard Rooms (petite at 236 square feet) have partial ocean views, while One-Bedroom Apartments have private balconies and dead-on views of the ocean.

In the hotel’s signature restaurant, the conservatory-like Salt, chef Jacques de Jager serves a modern French menu inspired by South Africa. The serious à la carte dinner menu is divided between “out of the ocean” and “from the farm”; the seafood includes a platter of the local spoils: tiger prawns, mussels, line fish and more. The sommelier can advise you on the all-by-the-glass wine list; for something a bit stronger, there’s a well-stocked bar tucked behind a glass screen. Salt’s clifftop position and full wall of windows make it one of the best spots from which to admire the sunset, so book early and enjoy the famous sunset over a glass of local Pinotage.

Although the Ambassador can feel a world away from buzzing downtown Cape Town — especially from the ocean-facing pool, which is dotted with lounge chairs — all the sounds and sights of the V&A Waterfront, Camps Bay, Kirstenbosch and beautiful Clifton Beach are just a short cab ride away.
