How to Get There
We stayed at this hotel, having read a review in a UK national newspaper. Booking on line raised some questions regarding the rates, which prompted us to e-mail the hotel. Staff were extremely helpful, even telephoning us to clarify some points.
Rooms are huge for a city hotel, well appointed, and maintained. We ate in Post, where staff were friendly and helpful, and food was good.
Our room overlooked Cathedral Square, and was quiet,
Location is central, within easy walking distance to points of interest, restaurants and shops, plus the free buses that move around Perth.
All hotel staff were helpful and friendly, and we would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, or to stay there again,
Way too much to write to explain all-essentially the first 3 days of our stay were excellent, the restaurants we went to in the Como, the wine bar, the spa , the pool and gym...all great. The room was large and comfortable and the bathroom was perfect from every perspective.
Couple of small niggles-check in was really slow-this needs to be re looked at and speeded up-contrary to receptionists popular belief, check in is not the highlight of a travelers day.
Another niggle was that although the room was top notch , besides the couch in our room by the coffee table, there were no other comfortable chairs to sit in, at the, dining(?) table were two kitchen nook chairs that did not suit the decor or offer any practical value.Nonetheless the first 3 days were great -all went to pot however on the 3rd night. The Wildflower was no flower-more like a dried up bush-.Service was bad, staff pumped up with their own importance and not client orientated at all.Food was dismal at best and when I complained was told it was not horrible just bitter.
Mouth agog , I could not believe what had transpired ,I was not sure what to do with a plate of what would put Buffalo poo to shame , drop it on the floor next to me ?...finally the Maitre D came over to say food would be cancelled off the bill, but still left it in front of me.??
The Wildflower-how on earth did they get a chefs hat-most undeserved-the staff had a bad attitude-were badly trained and honestly , really crappy food to boot.
I have also not pointed out the fact that when we had arrived our booking could not be found and our reserved table had been given to another.
Still hungry we returned to our room and to further compound issues after a number of calls trying to get to the kitchen for room service and finally complaining to the on duty manager ( held on the first call 8 mins, the second call over 10 mins and the third I gave up after about 5 mins of holding onto a phone with no human on the other end) I was assure the chef would call me back-he did after about 30 mins and was so offhand I told him not to bother.
The evenings shoddy service unfortunately did not end there. As we were leaving very early the next morning for the airport I requested twice for my final bill-both were incorrect that were sent up to the room.
I actually had to resort to going downstairs and sorting it out. .I paid, my card was debited-I asked for a bill reflecting a zero balance and yup...you guessed it the bill given to me after payment was wrong.
To say that in one evening a stay was destroyed is an understatement-the top restaurant should be closed and their pub style restaurant elevated to loftier heights , the food and service was better at all the other "normal" restaurants.
The staff on duty from the Wild flower to room service and the chef on duty to the manager on duty were pathetic in their ability to handle issues that had gone pear shaped. It is fine to be recognized when all is going well, it is harder to be recognized as professional and handle issues in the required manner when things go bad.Unfortunately the Como staff, not all of them , but the ones on duty on our last evening need to be retrained and reminded they are there for the guests not their own self gratification. They were arrogant, unprofessional and basically unable to fill the task of the job spec they purported to fill.
I spoke to the GM the following day and emphasized I wanted no freebies or hand outs-just to get her staff re trained and reeducated on their functions.
I do know with certainty that I will never stay at a Como again not only when when next in Perth but anywhere there may be a Como, In Perth I will stay at the Ritz Carlton when it opens.A real 5 star hotel.
I think for a hotel to maintain its 5 star rating, which I was led to believe Como had ,they should be required to have to re certify annually by the respective ratings agency-Como would without question lose a star or two if they were to re certify, especially if put under pressure-they are just not in the leagues of the other 5 star hotels, like the Four seasons and Langham's in Australia ,or globally and definitely will never be one of the greats.
I enjoyed my stay at this hotel very much. The rooms are wonderful. I booked with American Express and was therefore given an upgrade. There is a beautiful view of a park, an enormous very comfortable bed and an immense bathroom with bathtub and shower. Everything is wonderful but the reason i would stop short of five out of five is that the staff at reception are overly bureaucratic. They kept us waiting ages to check in even though there was nobody else but me, and it took ages for them to manage to go through the lengthy process even though the rooms were prepaid and we had just arrived after an exhausting journey and were longing to have a rest. Why does check in have to be such a painful procedure?
There is a good reason why this hotel is rated number 1 for Perth on TripAdvisor, the reason being that it is excellent. The bedrooms are spacious and will designed, with attention to detail. The service from the staff is excellent, and requests are met with a willingness to help. The hotel is located in the centre of the city (by the cathedral) and the shops and waterfront are a short walk away. If I return to Perth then I know where I will be staying!
Never had a better Italian meal outside Italy. From a fantastic antipasti sharing starter, followed by barramundi and rounded off with the lightest tiramisu. Excellent service and great wine list. Also had quick tour of the hotel - will definitely book to stay there when I return to Perth!
