An 18th-century manor house with a sublime spa, outdoor hot tub and two stellar restaurants, an hour from London
Set on 120 acres, Alexander House Hotel & Utopia Spa is an 18th-century manor house hotel in leafy West Sussex, an hour’s drive from London. Behind an imposing red brick façade, the lobby is suitably opulent, furnished with elegant wood paneling, chandeliers and oil paintings of tropical birds. There are original features aplenty in the drawing room: cream plaster cornices, bay windows with garden views, and a cream and honey-colored marble fireplace. The high-ceilinged entrance to the spa has some quirky features, including an oversize vintage birdcage containing three zebra finches.
Bed and Bath
Georgian sash windows let plenty of light flood into the large, airy guestrooms. Heavy silk drapes, period furniture and gold-tinged textured wallpaper all nod to the house’s rich history, while Sony stereo systems and iPod docks are welcome modern additions. Bathrooms are equally roomy, fitted out in cream and toffee marble, with large oval baths, walk-in rain showers and Temple Spa products.
The hotel's bistro, Reflections, focuses on such hearty British fare as Dover sole, pot-roasted chicken and sirloin steak sandwiches on homemade onion bread. Meals are served alfresco in the summer months. AG’s, the candlelit formal dining room, is a much grander affair, and the seven-course tasting menu with wine pairings is exceptional. The real deal-sealer, however, is the hotel's Utopia Spa, a subterranean dream of therapy pools, mosaic hot tubs, Grecian-style pillars, and a list of more than 40 tempting treatments. Be sure to leave time to soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi, set in an idyllic Georgian garden.
In the Area
The gorgeous Sussex countryside surrounding Alexander House is a treasure trove of historic monuments. Hever Castle was the childhood home of Henry VIII’s wife Anne Boleyn, while nearby Chartwell House was the family home of Sir Winston Churchill for more than 40 years. Wakehurst Gardens, a country estate affiliated with world-renowned Kew Gardens in London, is a bona fide British gem. And opera lovers flock to Glyndebourne, a cultural institution since the 1930s.
