West Hollywood glamazon smack on Sunset Strip with Cali cuisine and a hipster pool scene
Guests of this modern, glamorous Andaz won’t find paparazzi-hungry starlets holding court poolside or lingering around the hotel bar and restaurant RH—and that’s a good thing. While the hotel has a prime location on the Strip, it still manages to be surprisingly low-key. Celebs, movie producers, and directors are all here, but in a decidedly understated way. The low-lit, moody decor helps keep things on the DL (think buttery leather sofas, floating tentacle-like lighting, and dark wood floors). Upstairs, 239 rooms and suites have some of the best views of both the Sunset Strip and downtown LA, and, much like the rest of the hotel, are appointed with arty accents such as chrome Artemide lamps, Geneva sound systems, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Another highlight is the spacious roof deck, where several cabanas are available exclusively to hotel guests. Perfectly positioned to take in the surrounding Sunset neighborhood and the Hollywood Hills, they have views so striking that locals have been known to book a room simply for access to one of these bungalows. And while neighboring clubs tend to attract more of a European, bikini-and-towering-heels crowd, the pool at the Andaz is more of a plaid-shirt-hipster-in-Ray-Bans scene. It’s unassuming and chic: the perfect antidote to the LA scene.
In the Area
Museum hopping, shopping and dining are the true stars of the ’hood. Indulge at Sprinkles Cupcakes, with its famous red velvet numbers. Request a table in the Rojo dining room at the Bazaar at SLS and settle in for an evening of culinary theater. Chef José Andrés (an acolyte of Ferran Adrià) whips up an unexpected menu, with offerings such as cotton candy foie gras lollipops. Or catch a musical performance at the venerable House of Blues, right across from the Andaz on the Sunset Strip. The best seats are upstairs in the balcony if you want to avoid the crowds. For a quieter but still cultured time, look for pieces by Isamu Noguchi and Joan Miró in the Fran and Ray Stark Sculpture Garden at the Getty Museum.
