How to Get There
Stayed at Die Swaene only one night, but it was a great stay. The hotel is located on a canal, but it is very quiet, very close to the market and other places to visit (old windmills). The rooms were decorated beautifully, as well as the common room (looks like a museum!) and as an added bonus, they offer a pool to relax after a long day visiting the town. I would greatly recommend it! Great staff too.
IF you want to upset the good folk of Bruges tell them the only Belgian figures of any note are Tin Tin and Hercule Poirot.
Which is very unfair but, if true, I swear Msr Poirot would book in to the Boutique Hotel die Swaene on the banks of the canal surrounding the old town.
His fastidious insistence on excellence and perfections, his eye for beauty, his perfect taste in furnishings and fashion, all would have been met by this jewel of a hotel.
From the sumptuous reception with its flamboyant central ottoman and period pieces alll around, through to ornate bedrooms with super views over the canal, the great detective would have loved its lavish ornateness of this former 17th Century HQ of one of Bruges' ancient Guilds - the Guild of Merchant Tailors.
But the piece de resistance for him would have been the rococo-style 1779 Guild of Tailors Salon .This grand salon with its vaulted ceilings, and tapestry draped walls would have been the ideal setting for his unveiling of the murderer.
He could have leant against the grand piano by the bust of Napoleon, gazed into the great gilded mirror over the elegant fire place and pointed the finger of fate at the villain.
The whole place from the airy dining hall to the antique reception desk is a cornucopia of riches which are matched only by the willingness of the staff to help. Nothing is too much trouble. You need to leave your case. No problem. Need a morning pot of coffee. No problem. `Want directions or advice on where to eat and drink. No problem
I can't see Poirot in the Japanese-themed pool or the sauna but if he had popped in, he could have helped himself to a gown, a pair slippers and a fluffy towel to reclined on the comfortable loungers dotted around.
* One couple will not forget our family's visit. Impatient for us to be ready, our daughter banged on a bedroom door and as it opened asked: "Are you having sex in there?"
Somewhat bemused, the guest next door to us answered "Not at the moment," To which she blurted out: "I'm so sorry. I thought you were my mum and dad........."
This hotel at the side of the canal was like going back into an elegant time. The decor was superb. The staff extremely friendly. Spotlessly clean. Very near to everything you need to see..A family of eight of us went (all grown ups), and we were all very impressed.
