French-infused stay a block from the White House, with Pierre-Yves Rochon interiors and a popular bistro
The Sofitel trademark of embracing its French roots is obvious at Sofitel DC. Friendly staff greet guests with a “bonjour,” and croissants, cheese and wine selection are taken seriously. The DC outpost adds a hip American sensibility to that Francophile welcome. And there’s history to boot — the building was erected in 1880 on renowned Lafayette Square, which was named after the Marquis de Lafayette who fought during the Revolutionary War. The hotel’s French theme continues with interiors designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon, who restored the high-ceilinged lobby in a way that preserves the original foundation.
Bed and Bath
There are 237 guestrooms (starting at 370 square feet), including 17 suites, all with soundproof walls, sizable windows, contemporary furnishings and marble bathrooms with rain showers and Lanvin amenities. Good for groups and families, Superior Double Rooms are a spacious 400 square feet and accommodate four guests, while Junior Suites add separate living areas. Luxury Rooms catch some of city’s famous skyline through oversize windows.
While the location and coziness of the rooms and public spaces are prominent highlights, it’s the service you’ll remember most. The staff is efficient and friendly and collectively speaks seven languages. Guests delight in the Ici Urban Bistro, which offers a contemporary twist on French bistro cuisine. Breakfasts are à la carte, and free French-press coffee and tea are served throughout the day.
