The fantastic location, near the heart of DC’s action
The small size and historical architecture of the property, with a very intimate and decidedly un-Ritz-Carlton feel
The unique private dining room, featuring romantic nooks that are perfect proposal spots
What To Know
The unusually small size and low-key approach are charming for a Ritz-Carlton, but it means far fewer amenities than most Ritz hotels: one restaurant, a small day spa, a very small fitness center and little else
No pool — and DC is a hot, humid place during prime summer tourism season
Many visitors come to DC for its wealth of monuments and museums — none of which are in the Georgetown neighborhood, which is not served by the city’s Metro system

Swank boutique gem in a trendy part of Georgetown with industrial interiors, a spa and a restaurant
Brick industrial meets contemporary at the Ritz-Carlton Georgetown, making for two very different faces: the exterior and common areas and the guestrooms themselves. The exterior and lobby are industrially charming, showcasing high ceilings and lots of exposed brick, stone and heavy-gauge metal, in the theme of the original structure, which was an incineration plant. Because of DC’s strict height limitations, Handel Architects, who renovated the property, added parking and many hotel facilities underground.
Bed & Bath
Guestrooms are typical of Ritz-Carltons, with sleek contemporary furniture, large flat-screen TVs and modern luxury touches. Bedding, walls and two-layer blackout curtains and sheer drapes are all done in light taupe and natural colors, while the furniture is dark and modern. Beds have down duvets and 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets. Robes are thick terry, there’s free overnight shoeshine service, and the home theater entertainment system includes a DVD player. All guestrooms have either Potomac River or Georgetown neighborhood views. The highlights are the opulent bathrooms, made of slate and limestone and with large soaking tubs and separate walk-in glass showers.
A top-notch location and luxurious service are the highlights of this property, which has far fewer amenities than most urban Ritz-Carltons or other luxury city hotels. Degrees Bistro is the sole restaurant (there’s also 24-hour room service), and it serves three meals a day, featuring classic French bistro cuisine with locally produced seasonal ingredients. There’s also a comfortable lobby bar with a surprisingly complex menu of signature cocktails. The hotel has a small but luxurious spa, with steam and sauna facilities, and a small gym with state-of-the art equipment.
In the Area
Anything lacking in the hotel itself can be found just outside the door, in one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods, Georgetown. The charming C&O Canal, now a National Park Service unit, with its adjacent footpath, runs past the hotel — and on for almost 185 unbroken miles — and is hugely popular for walking, running and biking. DC’s Capital BikeShare program allows visitors to rent bikes for one day, three days or a week from automated kiosks around the city, and one is located around the corner from the hotel. Just a block away is the Potomac and the riverfront Washington Harbour complex, with several popular restaurants and bars capitalizing on their locations with open-air dining and drinking. Highlights include Sequoia and Nick’s Riverside Grill. A few blocks in the other direction are the main streets of the historic and affluent Georgetown neighborhood, M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, both lined with stores, eateries and bars of every description.
