The Look
Beyond Topaz’s otherwise anonymous brick façade facing tony Dupont Circle townhomes, a chic Moroccan-inspired retreat awaits. After a $2.3 million renovation in early 2012, the hotel rocks a Kasbah vibe with periwinkle printed curtains, mod poufs and mosaic floors and tile-like rugs.
Bed & Bath
Moroccan prints mix with specially commissioned pieces by local artists and Hollywood Regency touches: starburst mirrors, nailhead-trimmed chairs. The soothing palette of white and silver, periwinkle and grape feels fresh without being fussy. Guestrooms start at a spacious 375 square feet, half have an alcove and a separate dressing room and all have sparkling (but smallish) bathrooms hung with Kimpton's standard animal print robes.
Beyond
The Moroccan bazaar feel extends into the hip Topaz Bar, but the cocktail menu here is decidedly Asian-inspired. Its happy hour — a.k.a. Liquid Therapy — is one of the best in the District and extremely popular with the after work crowd, with signature Zodiac cocktails, and reasonably priced beer and wine. Stick around Thursdays for the Laughing Buddha comedy show. Got a good joke? Jump on stage yourself; amateurs that get a laugh drink for free.
In the Area
Logan Circle, one of D.C.’s trendiest neighborhoods, is just a 10-minute walk from the hotel. During the day, peruse the chic art galleries and shops (we love Transformer Gallery and Muleh boutique), and come nightfall sample the small plates at Estadio or Masa 14, and then sip craft beers at Birch & Barley. Need a breath of fresh air? D.C.'s Rock Creek Park is the country’s largest urban forest. Jog along the creek and watch for deer, hawks and even coyotes.
