Playful city stay just five blocks from the White House, with retro fittings and animal print galore
With all its pomp and circumstance, DC isn’t exactly known for irreverence. But the 137-room Hotel Rouge is one place that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Renovated in late 2011, the hotel’s Pop Art decor evokes a film set boudoir, with crimson leather, retro lamps in vivid hues and animal print furnishings. In the rooms you’ll find flat-screen TVs and whimsical extras like romance kits in the minibar. Accommodations are spacious, and also include iHome docking stations. Families traveling together will appreciate the Bunk Bed Suites, featuring a curtained alcove with extra sleeping space. As with other Kimpton properties, the Hotel Rouge offers a nightly lobby wine hour. Continue with drinks in the hotel's bar, which also serves charcuterie plates, fresh seafood, chicken wings and bacon burgers. Work off the calories in the 24-hour fitness center, then unwind with an in-room spa treatment.
In the Area
Just to the northeast of the hotel is the Logan Circle Historic District a pristine eight-block example of a prosperous late-19th-century residential neighborhood. A few blocks farther north is the U Street Historic District, which has brick Victorian-era architecture and the former theaters and jazz clubs that made the area a cultural center during the early 20th century. Also within walking distance: The Smithsonian, the world’s largest museum complex, with 19 museums and a zoo, free of charge. At night, hit the U Street corridor for a lively bar scene and some excellent happy hours—Marvin and Café Saint-Ex are great places to start.
