How to Get There
So my friends and I planned a ski trip to Deer Valley, but my wife is not much of a skier and doesn't like the cold. Therefore I felt compelled to find the most convenient and luxurious arrangement for my wife, 5 year old, and 1 year old.
I quickly narrowed my hotel search to Stein Eriksen, St. Regis, and Montage. The prices and level of quality appeared to be similar between these 3 hotels. The previous reviews were also excellent for Montage, so I took the plunge - and I'm so happy that I did that.
We arranged for a shuttle (Protrans) to take us to the Montage from Salt Lake City airport. Cost was $130 each way (not including tip). Driving in to the hotel is impressive because the heated driveway is surrounded by lit up Christmas trees. A family arrived just before we did so the valet guy was occupied for a few minutes before helping us with the bag. No big deal.
Check-in was smooth with Ryan who took us on a tour of the hotel ending at our 2 bedroom residence (room 841). There was a cute sign and chocolates for my kids as well as a nice bottle of wine for my wife and I when we walked in.
The rooms are very comfortable. We brought our nanny who occupied one of the rooms. Our bedroom and the main living room had gas fireplaces that REALLY heat up the room. The kitchen was perfect for our needs, and the hotel even has a service that did grocery shopping for us prior to our arrival. The residence had 3 bathrooms. We appreciated the heated floor in the master bath. There appeared to be a steam unit in our shower as well but we didn't use it. The daily cleaning as well as turn down service was consistent.
As for the property, it was gorgeous with great views in all directions. My 5 year old loved the daily smores at 4:30 as well as the tubing hill behind the hotel. Both my kids loved meeting the hotel's Bernese dogs each day. My nanny took our 1 year old to the pool, but the water was too cold for the baby. Our room came with a breakfast buffet at Apex each day which we found to be excellent. We especially enjoyed our service from Christina and Tadir(sp?) at Apex. The burger at Burgers and Bourbon is delicious, and their selection of whiskey is impressive - unfortunately they were out of Pappy when my buddies and I ate there. For Dinner, we ate at Apex, Yuki Yama, J&G grill at St. Regis, and Riverhorse. All 4 were excellent, but my group probably liked J&G the best. Note, Riverhorse needs to be booked well in advance.
We used Compass sports on the ground floor of the hotel to rent our ski equipment. It's really nice having someone help you put on and take off your boots as well as help you get your skis/poles set up each day. You can ski from the Compass sports area directly to a few chairs, i.e. Empire chair-lift or down to the Lady Morgan chair-lift.
If you have a child enrolled in the Deer Valley ski school, like we did, I might recommend storing your child's (and even the rest of the family's skis/poles) at the Deer Valley ski valet. That will save you the hassle of transporting the skis back and forth from Montage. We found it more convenient to put on our boots at Compass sports, take the shuttle to Deer Valley, drop our kid off at ski school, and then just get our own skis from the Deer Valley ski valet. It's nice to have so many options to store your skis!
We didn't rent a car since we knew we were either staying on property or would venture no further than the main drag in Park City. The shuttle service at Montage was reliable for nearly all of our trips. Only on one occasion, when I needed a ride at 6:30 pm on Saturday night to get to Main street was I told it was a 40 minute wait for the shuttle, so I took an Uber.
Overall this hotel is a no brainer for me. On our last day in Deer Valley, my friends, who were staying in a vrbo, came to the Montage with their kids to spend the afternoon. They loved it so much that they decided they would come stay at the Montage next year. This is a high quality, well run hotel. From day one, most of the staff will know and call you by name. It's elegance with a special twist of family emphasis. We will be back.
Wow! The moment the hotel comes into view as you are driving through the mountains, then you hit the tree lined entrance, all lit up like Christmas - STUNNING! This hotel did NOT disappoint. The rooms are beautifully appointed, amazing views, great amenities, inside and out. Everything was first class from the hotel to the room to the service - can't wait to go back!
We had an excellent lunch today at very fair prices. Suggest that you leave your car with the very nice attendants. The only lower value bill I had in my money clip was a five. He seemed pleased with that at the return delivery.
Montage did a great job meeting our every need during our week stay. We arrived late and were checked in quickly and given a brief tour of the property on the way to our villa. The valets were friendly and quick each time we left the resort. Housekeeping did a good job with daytime cleaning and nighttime turn down service. The ski valets in Compass were extremely helpful with getting our skis and boots for us. The location is gorgeous. We enjoyed the Smores in the afternoon and the nightly entertainment in the club. The spa had knowledgeable attendants and the wet areas were fantastic. The massage I had was amazing. We look forward to a future trip to Montage Deer Valley.
Have not had the chance to stay here yet, but definitely on my list now. We stopped in for some drinks and appetizers and ended up staying for hours playing pool and enjoying the magnificent views.
