How to Get There
I stayed here for a conference so I did not eat at many of the restaurants or bars but the Buffet Breakfast was great and there was lots to choose from.
It is a great location because you can walk to everywhere, the water park, the Port for shopping and day trips etc.
The room had plenty of space with two queen sized beds that were super comfortable. Bathroom was maybe a little small but was fine for the two of us, wouldn't like to see 4 people sharing it though.
Would have been nice if the deck door had a screen on it rather than the big heavy door. We are both country people who really are not fans of Air-con on a good day so it was a bit annoying not being able to open the deck door at night and enjoy the nice breeze off the water instead of Air-Con.
Room was always clean and tidy when we returned each day.
Pool was lovey with a number of deep spots for the adults and shallow areas for the kids. We thought the whirl-pools were hot tubs which would have been awesome, but they were not. we did take advantage of the Adults Only Pool which was nice but the hours where staff were there to get towels was very minimal.
Typical Denarau Island in that there is no beach, it is rocks straight into the water and you are not allowed to climb over the rocks to swim in the ocean. If you want a beach swim then you have to walk across to the Sofitel or the Sheraton which have a bit of beach access.
Otherwise we had an enjoyable stay and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
Have stayed at the Westin a few times now. It has such a lovely charm about it but some of that charm needs a bit of maintenance! I love the look of the rooms but, the toilet really needs an exhaust fan. The balcony sliding doors also seem a bit warped and need a little work. The buffet breakfast is fabulous, the addition of a fresh juice station since our last visit is great. We were celebrating our 25 wedding anniversary and I mentioned this to a staff member as we were escorted to our table. We were so blown away when a number of staff came to serenade us a bit later on. We will always treasure that memory. On the negative side, the food and drink is overpriced. $14F for a local beer ? The Hilton were offering that at half the price. We had to return a salad from the Wet Edge bar as it was tasteless. On the positive side, the swimming pool is truly a work of beauty, maybe a few more shading umbrellas. Love the Westin to bits but we were happier eating at the other nearby resorts.
We'd booked a 6 day stay in Fiji, but we ended up extending by a 5 day stretch, because we were having a wonderful time from the moment we arrived. Wow. Fiji rocks.
We chose Westin as our last accommodation, in part for its proximity to Nadi International Airport, but also thanks to the great reviews the Westin had garnered.
Checking in was a pretty smooth process and was completed relatively promptly, that is, compared to the other resorts we'd stayed at in Fiji. It seems we're rather spoiled on this count, because in our neck of the woods, Singapore/Malaysia, checking in tends to take 5 minutes tops. In Fiji, checking in and out routinely took about 15-20 minutes or more. Oh well, Fiji time.
Mind you, we were especially happy in the end at the Westin; not only did we receive a room upgrade, but the room was also ready for us way before actual check-in time. Awesome service by our courteous and obviously experienced counter staff. (FYI, bespectacled and of Indian origin.)
The room itself was lovely, quite spacious and spotless, with a complimentary 6-pack of water bottles and generous tea, coffee, sugar, sweetener and creamer, the works.
Now, decor-wise, things may be a wee bit dated here, given the resort's tenure, but the whole interior was very well-maintained all the same. Perhaps the bathroom was a little on the cramped side, although the way it had been contemporarily refurbished made up for this.
Frankly, our room at the Westin was nothing short of a fresh, cool and ever so tranquil sanctuary. If anything, perhaps the tv could do with a cable plan boost; the channels were pretty lame. Of course, this is subject to taste and anyway by no means a biggie, especially when you have a sea-facing balcony at your disposal as serene as ours. This was, in a word, magnificent.
Meanwhile, the bed in our room, a king-size, was insanely comfortable. We slept like a rock, no mean feat for us. And if it’s plenty of internet wifi you need, Westin has it.
On the wanting side, note that, like quite a few of the adjacent Denarau resorts, the Westin doesn't really have a beach. In fact, the intertidal zone there is solely made up of a rocky breakwater, placed there by the resorts to stop the ever advancing sea over the years. We were told this by one of the caretakers there. Apparently, it was sandy beaches galore back in the early days.
So, in other words, if you want to swim or snorkel at a beach, you need to make your way towards the Sheraton next door, albeit one of those somewhat blackish volcanic-type beaches.
Incidentally, the sea water here is not quite as clear and inviting as you'd expect from Fiji. For good snorkeling and paradisiacal beaches, I recommend the surrounding islands.
On to the F&B. The breakfast buffet wasn't really worthy of the Westin's 5 star status. The fresh fruit did stand out for its excellent quality. Ditto the fresh juice bar. But I'm sorry to say that most of the other buffet stations were a bit meh, in particular given our 5-star expectations.
Again, there's no accounting for taste, but my concern is that generally, the breakfast spread was lacking a degree of lavishness that should come with 5 stars.
We also ordered room service once, i.e. from the room service menu, and were charged an additional FJD$ 12 for the privilege, as per the room service terms. I found this amount shameful and shameless at the same time, particularly since what we'd ordered was already rather overpriced and bland to boot.
Bottom line, given the high prices for the F&B at the resort, I feel Westin needs to choose: either you A) Charge an arm and a leg for your food and drink and make it top-notch quality, that is, 5 stars. Or you B) Lower your F&B prices to the standard at which it's served currently. As it stands now, I feel guests cop it on the nose twice.
By the way, I've noted the various resort manager's replies here about the relatively high taxes charged by the Fiji authorities on certain imports. This is why I suggest you then at least raise your F&B game. Thank you.
Lastly, a note to the Westin staff. I wish I'd written down all your names because you truly make the Westin a home away from home. I recall our housekeeping lady (we were in Block 6) going out of her way twice to assist us. Thank you for your kindness.
A big thank you also to Nava, who tended to our table during one breakfast. You did an outstanding job, not just for us but for others around us too. We loved your proficiency, your ready smile and your upbeat chats. Clearly, you're going places.
But honestly, each and everyone of Westin's staff was superb, both professionally and in personality. Kudos for you. Lots of kudos.
Will we be back to Fiji? Full-on yes. In fact, we've already decided to do Fiji again in 2019. Will we stay at the Westin again? The Westin isn't flawless, but with the countless boxes it ticked for us, we'll more than likely return for another stay.
If I can address one final issue with Westin management. The way you're pushing your spa... seriously? We were accosted by your spa manager a total of 3 times, pushing her spa services hard on each occasion. Once, she even went around the breakfast tables, one by one, interrupting your guests' breakfast, including ours, in order to pitch her spiel. Amazingly, one time, as we made our way through the reception area, she hollered after us if we'd already booked our spa treatment.
This needs to stop. It's unbecoming.
The Westin Denarau is and I think, always will be, the best hotel/resort I’ve ever had the pleasure of staying in.
It’s been an unforgettable and memorable experience calling The Westin home for a week!
Firstly, the staff were my favourite part and who made my stay so amazing. They are so rich in happiness which is so contagious, there’s never a dull moment. You’re always greeted and made to feel welcome, they’re the most genuine people you’ll meet!
The pool was phenomenal, I’ve never seen such a well designed and beautiful pool. It was truly relaxing and unique. The adults pool was also a nice touch and very serene and luxurious.
I was also fortunate enough to receive a massage, defiantly consider getting one done, the ladies were so professional and it’s just what you need after a long flight!
Our room was always cleaned impeccably, beds soft, and amenities full. We stayed in the Ocean View room. The double sink was a nice touch.
Also, the men at the front of the lobby taking care of the bags were great at welcoming and farewelling us, we loved the enthusiasm every morning and afternoon.
Lastly, a big shout out to the kitchen staff and chefs/cooks. The food was delicious and always fresh. I loved the personal touches at breakfast of the juice and egg stations. And the gingerbread house in the lobby was breathtaking! The amount of time and effort the kitchen staff put into their job is admirable.
I’ll be defiantly returning back to The Westin Denarau, thank you so much for a memorable stay!
Stayed in The Westin Hotel in Denarau Fiji for 10 nights. From checking in we knew it is going to be great, Ema was very pleasant and accommodating to our request. We felt spoilt by all their wonderful staff, very friendly and welcoming. Room was very comfortable and clean, anything you ask gets done straight away. Wonderful food in Zing restaurant great breakfast with freshly squeezed juices!! Wow not many hotels do that. Catherine (zeta-jones 🤣) and Vani convince us to try their Spa and what an experience 👍🏼 Definitely worth a go, try Losalini and Sala for massage. We had a small misunderstanding and spa management did everything to put it right. THANKS.
Everybody was so nice few names (which I remember) Latoa, Ima, Anaist,Dan at the front entrance, Nitya and all the staff in the kitchen etc list goes on... thank you to all of you. It was best way to celebrate our 40th anniversary and my 65th birthday. Will definitely come back for more FIJI. 🙏🏼🙌🏼👏🏻👏🏻
