The Review

Clifton Inn is hidden away on a small side road in the rural countryside surrounding Charlottesville. The 100-acre property, originally part of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate, was a gift to Jefferson’s daughter, Martha. It’s the picture of Southern elegance: The centuries-old grounds are shaded by towering trees and include a croquet lawn, a waterfall infinity pool with hot tub and small cabanas, a clay tennis court and a huge lake where fishing is encouraged. Guests out for a leisurely walk will discover secret gardens and landscaped walkways.

Seven are in the main house, with the remaining 10 housed in outlying buildings, each with a different ambience. The simple Liveries building has light, airy Shaker-style rooms and views of the private lake, while the Carriage House contains the largest suite (730 square feet), which has a loft bedroom and an intimate garden patio. Each room mixes period decor with modern accessories and special touches such as Italian-made Mascioni linens, fresh orchids and free fruit and Madeira.

The inn’s serene location is within minutes of Charlottesville’s art galleries, shops and restaurants, as well as historical sites such as Monticello. A variety of Virginia wineries are also in the immediate vicinity, including Barboursville Vineyards, with its award-wining Bordeaux blend, Octagon.

Foodies will salivate over the inventive menus at the Clifton. Selections vary seasonally and often change on a daily basis. Chef Tucker Yoder uses mostly local produce, meat and fruit from nearby orchards to create everything from quail with fall squash to a braised short rib that falls apart at the touch of a fork. Here’s an insider’s tip: The popular chef’s table in the thick of the kitchen is open on a first-come, first-served basis. Just don’t say you heard it from us.

Getaway at Clifton

Beautiful relaxing getaway with friends. Excellent service. Excellent food. Lovely well appointed rooms. Had to share pool on Sunday with a local club we weren’t expecting...... very crowded. Other than that everything was fabulous.

Lovely, lovely, lovely

We spend a long weekend at Clifton as part of our 40th wedding anniversary celebration. Wonderful hotel, beautiful setting, attentive staff and great customer service. We appreciated that it was a pet-friendly venue as well. Conveniently located to Monticello, Montpelier, Charlottesville and of course the beautiful UVA campus. Wineries galore. Husband and I LOVED it.

Anniversary Bliss

This place was the perfect inn for our 1-year anniversary celebration. We didn't want to travel far, so Charlottesville was the perfect destination. The secluded feeling at The Clifton made our 24-hour resort get-away feel like a full vacation! The pool is wonderful! And I'm happy to report that it gets full sun for hours! We were there until the sun finally fell to shadow around 7pm!
We ate an anniversary dinner at the restaurant, and they were super accommodating, serving a special bottle of champagne that we brought specially for the anniversary and serving up our cake topper for our desert. (There was a very reasonable and expected corking fee for the champagne, but no fee for the dessert that we brought and they served for us!)
The grounds were gorgeous! Flowers in full bloom everywhere that looked like quaint English gardens. The white walled cottages were cute and quaint on the outside but had all the modern comforts and furnishings on the inside. Even the coffee from the coffee machine was delicious.
We did the on-site hikes before leaving and they were nice as well. The huge lake is a hidden gem, make sure you take a few minutes to walk down to the dock!
With nice grounds, staff, and food-- I'd be happy to recommend this place to my friends and family and look forward to coming again.

The Clifton is a little piece of heaven right here on Earth. The service is top notch, the grounds are beautiful and quiet, the room was clean and comfortable, the food was delicious and lastly the location is perfectly situated close to things to do but far enough away to feel like your hidden.:-)

A gem of a retreat that needs a just a little buffing

Aside from minor cleanliness and maintenance of rooms, the Clifton is a gem of an inn nestled in Albemarle County. It's a perfect getaway spot for couples to refresh and relax. The new décor incorporates the historical and fresh. The restaurant is superb and the bar selections are unique. The grounds are beautiful and pool is serene. With a little more attention to customer service, comfort, and details of upkeep, the Clifton would be the perfect retreat.
