Overview

The Review

Clifton Inn is hidden away on a small side road in the rural countryside surrounding Charlottesville. The 100-acre property, originally part of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate, was a gift to Jefferson’s daughter, Martha. It’s the picture of Southern elegance: The centuries-old grounds are shaded by towering trees and include a croquet lawn, a waterfall infinity pool with hot tub and small cabanas, a clay tennis court and a huge lake where fishing is encouraged. Guests out for a leisurely walk will discover secret gardens and landscaped walkways.

Seven are in the main house, with the remaining 10 housed in outlying buildings, each with a different ambience. The simple Liveries building has light, airy Shaker-style rooms and views of the private lake, while the Carriage House contains the largest suite (730 square feet), which has a loft bedroom and an intimate garden patio. Each room mixes period decor with modern accessories and special touches such as Italian-made Mascioni linens, fresh orchids and free fruit and Madeira.

The inn’s serene location is within minutes of Charlottesville’s art galleries, shops and restaurants, as well as historical sites such as Monticello. A variety of Virginia wineries are also in the immediate vicinity, including Barboursville Vineyards, with its award-wining Bordeaux blend, Octagon.

Foodies will salivate over the inventive menus at the Clifton. Selections vary seasonally and often change on a daily basis. Chef Tucker Yoder uses mostly local produce, meat and fruit from nearby orchards to create everything from quail with fall squash to a braised short rib that falls apart at the touch of a fork. Here’s an insider’s tip: The popular chef’s table in the thick of the kitchen is open on a first-come, first-served basis. Just don’t say you heard it from us.

The Clifton was just the perfect place for us. From the very beginning everything was perfect. Check in was so easy and pleasant. Our room, the Monticello Suite, was beautiful. A loved the furniture and our bed was so comfortable. My husband had never used the Nespresso Coffee maker and he ordered one for our home while we were there..such a nice touch. The bathroom was so clean and with the wonderful tub or shower which both were great. All the staff were so friendly and very helpful. The continental breakfast which was include was delicious. We also ordered breakfast and it was delicious too. I have reviewed the restaurant and bar separately . Now about the grounds..every morning I got up and sat in the rockers on the front porch enjoying the view..so peaceful. I also walked the grounds and down tho the lake..I posted pictures below. The pool area was amazing but the pool even on the very hot day we were there was to cold for me. I highly recommend this place and we will definitely be back. Thank you Clifton.

Beautiful Setting

Nice setting, nice rooms, nice bar, our only challenge was the restaurant. As a B&B the staff is light so service is slow and additional training is suggested! Plan extra time if you plan to eat on property. That said, food was good.
