How to Get There
We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at El Rio Y Mar. All transfers were smooth, efficient, no waiting which was great. The hotel grounds were very well maintained and clean. The pool/beach were also in good condition. We were impressed with the a la carte menu food, less so with the CNY buffet but understand it’s hard to cater for lots of people. Can’t emphasise enough how great all the staff were - informative, helpful, friendly, attentive and excellent!
This is a charming and relaxing resort. The staff were unfailingly helpful and welcoming, playing basketball with our teenage son at a moments notice. Watersports equipment, from fins to SUPs and kayaks were freely available. Of the available tours, I can recommend the Coron Island and the Island Hopping. Only attempt to snorkel on the Dugong tour if you are truly match fit. I swim 500m or more per day, but was unable to keep up with the guides and the Dugongs. However, there is no real need to take a trip for great snorkeling: the home reef is fabulous. Usually there was a shoal of a more than 100 Trevally in a spiralling column less than 10m off the jetty bar. 20m further was a channel in the reef where a shoal of 10-20 barracuda rested. You are warned to stay out of the water after dark (maybe at high tide) because of the lion fish: and sure enough, after dark you could usually see 3 or 4 of them hunting from the bar. Of course, all the usual suspects are there: Parrot Fish, Clown Fish, Bat Fish, Rays, Sail Fish, Trumpet Fish, Needle Fish, Eels, Cuttle Fish and any number of species I couldn't identify.
We stayed over Christmas, and as you'd expect in a predominantly RC county, it was duly observed on Xmas eve: a barbecue buffet and a carol concert where all the staff serenaded us to the accompaniment of the El Rio Trio, with Christmas decorations made by each staff department from recycled materials.
We stayed in Cedar Cabana 1, which was delightful. I read a 1 star review here complaining about the smell at high tide. Yes, the high tide floods under the cabana and into the mangrove beyond, but we didn't notice any smell in particular, and definitely not one of sewage.
Overall, if you want a remote beach/reef holiday and pure relaxation, I cannot recommend El Rio highly enough
We like this resort because of diving, we saw dugong in our last dive.
we book special floating spa when we arrived. and we double confirmed day before. At the end we cancel that day the diving and ready the spa. They told us we don't have your booking, it was very disappointed, what we had reconfirm before.
Other than that the resort was very good for relaxing holiday.
If you want a quiet relaxing get-away-from it beach holiday, this is a good choice. Minibus transfer from the airport takes about 20 minutes to a river pier. The last bit of road is rough. From the pier it is a further 20 minutes boat ride to the resort. There is nothing else there, just the resort.
We stayed in a one of the Casa Rooms which was light and airy and fronted onto the beach. They come in two storey blocks of four rooms. We were on the ground floor which we thought was better. Basically furnished but adequate.
It is quite a small resort and the facilities reflect that. The restaurant is fine but fairly basic.
If it were in amongst a bunch of other resorts it would be expensive for what it is. But it is the location that drives the value. It is really lovely.
They arrange diving, snorkelling etc. Check out their website.
And the staff were all amazingly helpful and friendly. I know they are trained to say good morning to the guests, but when the guy raking the sand on the beach greets you with a good morning smile, it counts for something.
We really enjoyed our two night stay. Great transfers to and from the resort which made things really easy for us. Loved the restaurant. Breakfast was great. All very relaxing. A great end to our holiday in Palawan.
