Gleaming, colonial-inspired grande dame in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City

The Lowdown

This imposing 244-room beauty radiates French Colonial elegance, and offerings like proper afternoon tea and a swank martini bar expand on the Indochine theme. Rising nine stories above Lam Son Square in busy District 1, the hotel is ideally situated to take advantage of historical sites and Saigon’s best shopping streets. The property also acts as an urban oasis guests may not want to leave, thanks to a pool set in tropical gardens and tended by attentive staff, and a smorgasbord of dining options – from the upscale Italian restaurant Opera, overlooking the opera house, to Vietnamese-oriented Square One, or The Lounge, with its posh afternoon tea ritual. The Xuan spa, meanwhile, showcases distinctly southeast Asian treatments, from an apricot blossom massage to a lymphatic treatment using bamboo suction cups.

In the Area

Just steps from the hotel are the magnificent 800-seat Opera House, built in 1897 by French architect Ferret Eugene, and the Neo-Romanesque basilica Notre Dame. See the thoroughly modern capitalist side of Vietnam at one of its glitzy malls: both Vincom Center and Diamond Plaza offer plenty of high-end ways to part with cash. Then dive back into raucous old Saigon at the Binh Tay Market, the largest Chinatown in Vietnam, set on the banks of the Saigon River, where you can do everything from slurp noodles to haggle for Chinese spices.

Tranquility in Ho Chi Minh City

I have a thing for Park Hyatts in Asia and the Park Hyatt Saigon did not dissapoint. The lobby is bustling and beautiful, the check in was easy, and the room amentities, including fresh fruit and a bottle of wine (!) were amazing. We overlooked the city, but heard no noise unless we opened a window. Room furnishings are comfortable and luxurious without overdoing it. The service, including maids, food/bar serving staff and concierge/check in were all impeccable. And the pool is awesome. We had breakfast included with our stay, and for that I am thankful. The space is really pleasant, and there is a great combo of western and Vietnamese foods (pho and bahn mi for breakfast). While not inexpensive, for a hotel of this quality it is an excellent deal and I recommend it highly.
