So close to being “Very Good”

My wife and I just spent a week at Fra. Lorenzo and here are our thoughts.

Spectacular views over the city and river from this hillside location, beautiful building, immaculate grounds and pool.....a little bit isolated.
All staff we encountered before and during our trip were wonderful, helpful and always smiling, though the hotel seemed, generally, understaffed.
Other reviewers and management spend much time discussing how long it takes to walk to and from the hotel to the main town, via the path, and in our experience all are about correct. We are in our sixties, fit, healthy and regular walkers. The time taken, however, is not as important as the steepness of the path, particularly the 250/300m as you leave and approach the hotel. It is not to be underestimated!, is VERY STEEP and perhaps, reasonably, only for the very fit and healthy. Hotel has mini-van to town at 11:00 and return at 18:00....check times at desk as they may vary........more often would be better. Taxis are about €14 each way.
Another reviewer comments that room cleaning seems superficial and we agree. This is perhaps as staffing levels permit no more.
Breakfast is described by management, in response to another review, as American Buffet Style. We spend several months each year in America and are afraid that management’s description is only correct if you have been staying in a cheap, roadside motel. The cold buffet is adequate if predictable but the hot offering is only bacon and eggs. Judge for yourself if only bacon and eggs as a hot, breakfast offering, is good enough in a hotel of quality.
Breakfast service, too, is poor. A single, clearly untrained waiter had to take orders, serve and clear tables. This meant that dirty dishes were not promptly removed. This problem is not the fault of the courteous, hardworking waiter (he is also the mini-van driver, does some cleaning and serves tables in the evening)...the waiter is doing all he can but would surely benefit from specific training and simply, more staff are needed at breakfast.
At breakfast, too, guests have to queue in a line, with their coffee cup, to use the one coffee machine which makes a variety of types of single cups of coffee. After guests have lined up to get their coffee they then have to line up, again, to use the single toast machine. While you are in line your eggs and bacon are getting cold as they have been served to your table. Again, is this good enough for this hotel?
Respectfully, in our opinion, the breakfast offering and service needs a complete rethink by management.

There is much to enjoy about Fra. Lorenzo, particularly the current staff. Increased staffing levels, more regular shuttle to and from the town and a complete reassessment, of at least the current breakfast hot offering and service provision, would surely improve the guest experience and perhaps encourage return.

Just really lovely! A beautiful hotel.

Traveled with my daughter for a short break. The hotel was fantastic with great attention to detail. Really lovely. Everything was spotlessly clean and the staff very attentive and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble! Our room (luxury suite ) was super and the balcony was very much enjoyed. Breakfast outside, by the lemon trees, was wonderful. Great choice of food and very fresh. We also really enjoyed the option of being able to eat at the hotel in the evening. Again very good food. The pool area, which is surrounded by lovely olive trees and has a view over the city, was very clean and never too busy. Beautiful when lit up at night. Then of course the views! magnificent!
The hotel is a little way out of Verona but for us this made our holiday better as we could enjoy the beautiful town but combine sight seeing with some relaxing pool time - something not offered by other hotels in the city centre. The walk down is very easy and we found that taking a taxi back up again was the best way to return. Just a little tip if you do decide to walk up - don't follow the signs to the hotel after the residential part of the walk, as these take you the long way round on the road. Look via street view and you will see a footpath just after the built up part of the road. This will take you to the hotel!
We will definitely be wanting to return to Relais Fra' Lorenzo! Thank you to the owner and staff for making us so welcome. The little bottle of Fra' Lorenzo olive oil was especially appreciated - a really special parting gift!

I have just had a fantastic time at my niece's wedding. The location was beautiful, the room very comfortable and the manager and staff were happy to help in any way they could. I can certainly recommend this hotel. So peaceful and relaxing.
