Immerse yourself in the rich history of Venice with a stay at the 13th-century Palazzo Selvadego, occupying an unbeatable location just behind the iconic St. Mark’s Square. With its Gothic façade, thick stone walls, gargoyles and tall arched windows, the property is a shining example of Venetian Byzantine architecture. Behind its imposing facade, though, the hotel’s elegant guest rooms feature a subtle Beaux Arts design, with much more modern furniture and amenities.
Palazzo has been recommended by Condé Nast Johansens as a best luxury hotel, but you don’t need to stay at the hotel itself to have a dreamy Venice stay. Pop over to sister Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal a few minutes away for a sumptuous buffet breakfast while watching the world float by on the famed Grand Canal. Then, set off to wander the city’s alleyways, and make a stop for the nearby Venice Casino for an extra dollop of fun and thrills.
Superior rooms cover a generous 269 square feet and feature exposed-beam ceilings, dark-wood parquet flooring and fine fabrics on furniture in the sitting area. En-suite bathrooms are also large and well equipped.
Amenities- Satellite TV- Wi-Fi access- Air conditioning- Coffee machine- Direct-dial telephone- Hair dryer- Minibar- Safe
Complimentary buffet breakfast is served at sister Hotel Monaco & Grand Canal a couple of minutes away. Expect hot and cold choices, including fresh pastries and croissants. All can be enjoyed on the al-fresco terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, weather permitting. For other meals, there are many restaurants in the vicinity.
Palazzo Selvadego couldn’t be more central, being just behind St. Mark’s Square and next to the Correr Museum. Although this location means it can be a tad noisy in the mornings and early afternoon, it all quiets down towards late evening. The hotel makes a great base from which to explore many of Venice’s main attractions on foot. The legendary Rialto Bridge is about half a mile away, while Venezia Santa Lucia train station is a half-hour walk (or 10-minute drive) away.
How to Get There
The hotel is situated directly behind St Marks Sq. So first and foremost, since I had a room on the lowest floor overlooking the closest point to the Action, it was quiet. No crazy noise enters the room!!!
It is clean and tidy. A bit aged on the appearance of the furniture but the mattress and pillows are very comfy and I enjoyed 2 good nights of rest. The washrooms are modernized and the detailing is quite interesting. White Italian marble is used all around and a sunken shower area has rubber padding to prevent you slipping. There is plenty of warm water but a curtain separates the shower zone from the rest of the washroom so cooler air lifts the curtains as you bathe.
The air conditioning works very well and there is tea and coffee sachets available in room.
The lone attendant at the front desk is very helpful. We met the two guys that worked the shifts and they helped us to figure out the unplanned activities!
Outside, looking at the hotel, there is much to be desired. Inside is a different story. Our room had a 14 foot ceiling, two windows overlooking the courtyard out front, and 110 volt power for us American travelers. Comfortable bed, spent two nights. Best part, the hotel is 100 feet from St Marks Square.
I would highly recommend this place!
Superb hotel which is literally a stone's throw from St Mark's Square. Great service, lovely room, clean, good A/C, loved everything about this place. Bed was comfortable and extra blanket available. Bathroom was spacious. Free wifi.
Stayed in this property for a day. Above Ermenegildo Zegna Store and you get a view of Grand canal from few rooms. Neighbourhood is the best you can expect. San Marco square is next to the hotel.
1. Everything from location, staff, rooms & washroom. Well stocked mini bar and comfortable bed.
Suggestion: starting checking out guests in your hotel instead of other property. Will save time and people will be happy not to compare the hotels & facilities available.

An excellent room overlooking over the Grand Canal. Location was perfect being just off the main square. Staff were friendly and helpful. Especially Mario. Breakfast served just round the corner was also excellent.
