Located on the southern slopes of Monte Bernisa, between the traditional Valencian town of Xàtiva and the foothills of the breathtakingly beautiful Xàtiva Castle, La Maga Rooms hotel brings some glorious minimalist modernity to an area steeped in history. There’s a nod towards tradition too though, with the design-led contemporary aesthetic of its rooms softened by weathered wooden cabinets, traditional mosaic flooring and some superb old Spanish hospitality from the hotel’s owner, Estela.
Once a pilgrim’s hostel, the recent high-spec renovation ensures La Maga Rooms is one of the best spots to explore a stunning part of Spain influenced as much by the Islamic legacy of the Moors as it is by traditional Spanish culture. Head to this quirky, unique hotel and you could be lazing back in your freestanding bathtub, looking out past the polished concrete flooring, Baroque mirror and contemporary artwork towards the castle in the mountains, still standing imposing and impressive after more than a thousand years of turbulent local history.
How to Get There
It is now our 3rd or 4th stay in La Maga and it is always with great pleasure that we visit Estela. It seems that we know her for years ! Rooms are very comfortable and the location is perfect to visit the city of Xativa, its lively pubs and restaurants, the castle Montsant and the area (including Valencia and the seaside). Last but not least, breakfasts are gorgious !
Me and my wife have stayed here for the last 3 years, unfortunately this year we had to cancel due to sickness so we really need to book again soon. Anyway Estella the owner is great, a very laid back happy go lucky woman with a great eye for detail. We always stay in the suite with the free standing bath and beautiful bed, the shower is a great size and the windows give it a light and airy feel. Breakfast isn't like your typical hotel breakfast, very rustic with a selection of hams and homemade jams with a personal to each guest, we always sit out on the street with passing locals pleasantly saying "Hola" or "Buenos dias". The town centre is only a 5 minute walk away through the traditional Spanish streets. While you are here you have to visit the castle, if your into walking it's a good hike but well worth it. We will be visiting again soon hopefully.
We really enjoyed our stay. Estella was a great host with lots of advice about the town. The double room was very modern. Best of all though is the location at the top of the old town, it is a short walk to the cathedral and main square or you can ascend the hill to trails and the castle.
