Fading Old Star

Stayed at this hotel with a number of friends and have mixed views!

The hotels location is unquestionably stunning, with views across the lake to Castle Bled, with pleasant walks and local bars, restaurants just a short distance away. The staff are all pleasant albeit service sometimes very slow (15 minutes if you order a cappauccino at breakfast). The rooms were also clean and the WI-FI was uninterrupted and reliable across the property.

Unfortunately the hotel is very tired, dated and in desperate need of some renovation. Our lake view suite had very old furniture, the bed creaked every time you moved, and the ‘inflatable mattress’ extremely dated. The bathroom was also a throw back to 1976 and the shower was simply a hand held mounted on the wall, and the poorly positioned shower panel only stopped some of the water hitting the floor.

I have read the previous hotel responses to reviews about how they try to maintain the ‘character’ of the hotels past, but that’s no excuse not to renovate and keep up with the times. You can still renovate and clearly maintain a hotels past as demonstrated by The Dorchester or Waldorf Astoria.

The hotel undoubtedly has a historic past and an amazing location, but my advice is that if your a seasoned traveller and this is one stop in many, you will look back and chuckle at the dated old girl that is the Hotel Toplice! However, if this is your one holiday of the year and expecting true five star luxury - then go elsewhere. In my humble opinion this hotel is priced too high and surviving on it’s past and stunning location, rather than providing a true five star luxury experience.

Nice view, uncomfortable bed
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

This hotel has an excellent location, right on lake Bled, with a very nice serene view from the lake facing rooms. It is grand and a nice place to stay.

- Very good location
- Excellent views
- Clean
- Friendly service
- Good breakfast
- Parking on site

- Bed was old and creaky. Woke up with a back pain.
- Food is on the expensive side.

Overall a very good hotel. I would recommend definitely getting a lake view room.

Stunning view and staff, but dated rooms

We stayed at two hotels on Lake Bled and whilst we liked both, we felt the Grand Toplice didn't quite reach the mark. The views from our balcony were stunning and the staff very friendly and helpful. However, the beds were very uncomfortable, the pillows seemed to squash to nothing and the room very very hot. After having the air conditioning on for some time (which was making strange loud sounds the whole time) I rang reception and was told that as the heating was on the air conditioning wouldn't work and that we should open the doors to our balcony, whilst this worked in the short term it did mean we work up very cold in the morning. The breakfast selection was good and the dinner we had in the main restaurant was delicious, if lacking a little in atmosphere. I think with some room modernisation this hotel could once again be truly grand and a proper 5*.

Excellent Hotel

This hotel is located right on the edge of lake Bled. It is a historical hotel with photos of many famous people visiting there in the past , include Prince Charles of England and President Trump. It a little outdated and need some up-keeping. But if you get a lake front room, you get a breadth taking view of lake Bled right from your room balcony. There is a indoor natural spring swimming pool where the spring water keep seeping up from the bottom of the pool. The water is very nice and fresh. The spa area has 4 different kind of spa for you to try. We have lunch in the hotel and the food is very good. While you are in this hotel, a MUST try is the now famous local Kremna Rezina ( Bled Cream Cake ) which is originally created in this hotel kitchen. The cake was very delicious and I have 2 pieces in order to satisfy my taste bud. Highly recommended.

Old World Charm

Really loved this hotel on the shores of Lake Bled. Old fashioned but comfortable rooms. Amazing view of the lake, island and castle. We hired a rowboat for a couple of hours- great fun! Spa/ pool area was interesting. Ate dinner at the informal outdoor terrace café which was nice. Included breakfast was excellent
