Amazing staff

Welcoming check in desk, friendly staff, really knowledgeable waiter who knew his wine and provided excellent service. The food was excellent in the Julijana restaurant and the staff were very accommodating despite requiring food very late due to our flight arrival time.
Decor at the hotel was slightly dated but it still had a luxury feel. The view from our suite was incredible of the lake. The spa had a nice atmosphere but the naked saunas weren’t really that appealing to us.
One evening we left our key stupidly in the outside of the door, and staff came to tell us politely and provided us chocolate which we felt was a nice touch. We were also offered water for our journey once we had checked out which I also thought was very considerate. Thank you for a nice stay!

Dated 'luxury'

Yes, this hotel is good - the front desk staff were lovely, the breakfast had excellent selection, the views from the front facing rooms are spectacular across the lake to the island, there are rowing boats you can borrow for free for 1 hour (just long enough to get to the island for a few minutes and back), the location gives easy access to both town and lake, if there is a space you can get a much sought-after parking space in a town otherwise bereft of spaces, the swimming pool downstairs looked lovely (though we didn't have time to try it out on our one night stay) and you can congratulate yourself at staying at a hotel which has welcomed many world famous people.

But crucially I would only go here if you get a good deal. We would never normally aim to stay in a high quality hotel, preferring simple family run places on this trip, but we paid €120 for a night off peak season, which is expensive by Slovenia standards but we felt ok for a night in a fancy hotel on a special occasion. Any more than that and I'd say think very hard, unless you value the prestige and vague self-importance of a so-called 'luxury' hotel, because the place is tired and worn. All the carpets look worn; the bedroom we had smelled musty and strange; every single floor board sagged and creaked so much that a quick visit to the loo during the night was guaranteed to wake up anyone in the room and probably the people downstairs too; the lighting was yellow and dank and the doors onto the balconies crashed closed and felt like the single-glazed window panes were about to disintegrate, among many other things.
Don't get me wrong, we had a good time and would go back if the price were right, but if this place wants to continue calling itself luxury, it will need to do a lot of work very soon indeed. It is stuck in the mid-20th century at the moment.

Period hotel

This hotel is situated overlooking the lake and the castle. The hotel is older and could do with some renovation. However the location cannot be matched. Some of the staff were good but some were not. I noticed some of the waiters making fun of an Asian couple while we were having breakfast.
