A fun Southwestern retreat just north of Phoenix and Scottsdale, with beautiful mountain vie
Yes, there’s an Arizona town called Carefree, and yes, its thoroughfares have names like Tranquil Trail and Lazy Lane. Get a taste of the happy-go-lucky lifestyle at what was the first destination resort in town and once hosted such luminaries as Lucille Ball, Bob Hope, and Dick van Dyke. The 23-acre Carefree Resort & Conference Center may be located on Mule Train Road, but with its extensive array of leisure offerings and activities, it could just as well be on Easy Street (which is, incidentally, just a few blocks away). There are five lighted championship tennis courts, a wildflower-studded botanical garden, a serenity-inspired pool, and even paddles for pick-up games of pickleball. You’ll also find a desert-inspired spa as well as a restaurant and bar that serves burgers and brews. All 218 rooms come with their own private balcony or patio, but it’s worth leaving it on Saturday nights to hear a local pianist serenade diners at dinner.
In the Area
After checking off Carefree Resort’s championship tennis courts, pools, and botanical gardens, take a trip around the historic artist colony. Carefree Desert Gardens showcases hundreds of cacti, while spotting wildlife is a favorite local pastime at expansive Bartlett Lake. For active types, there’s a beautiful one-mile walk through the ruins at Sears Kay or a more strenuous trek around Cave Creek Regional Park. Spur Cross Stables also offers horseback rides. A bit farther out are the red rocks of Sedona, if you’re up for a day trip, with Phoenix less than an hour away.
How to Get There
Environment and attitude of every one their made my visit excellent, I almost hated to leave. A beautiful place with pool and walking areas. A great Spa and restaurant with a nicely stocked bar.
Food was excellent and the wait staff was happy to see me weather it was right at opening or close to closing.
The variety of classes available, and the friendliness and helpfulness of the activity and reception staff was excellent! We learned 2 new different types of yoga and had a lot of fun learning pickle ball too!
A nicely appointed property that really seems to cater to the spa and wellness experience. The grounds are clean, the staff was friendly and helpful and the rooms did not lack comfort. I did not get the chance to experience the restaurant, but in passing by the outside tables, the food looked and smelled tasty.
