How to Get There
My friend and I had a fabulous time at the Shangri-La in Abu Dhabi. The staff were so friendly, the Front Office Manager Hadi and a lovely staff member Loubna were so helpful to us Ozzies. Willing to do anything for us. We felt like royalty. Meals were superb, wonderful friendly family atmosphere with excellent hospitality from Dunga, Lina, Joby, Cherry, Cindy and Belch. Room was wonderful with a view of the pool ???? highly recommend.
Classy nice resort. Top notch service, accommodations were culturally fitting. Not extra super contemporary but classy and still very nice. The mosque view from my room was bomb. The private boat ride is definitely a great luxury amenity. No complaints. They were happy to have us and I was happy to be their guest.
This was our first stay in a Shangri-La hotel and we were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable. The check in process was smooth. We saw others that arrived during our stay received a drink on arrival. We did not but perhaps this was because we arrived early in the morning. Despite the time of arrival, the receptionist confirmed our room was ready and we were delighted. This really was most welcome after a long journey. We had a quick breakfast and then went to our room. Not only was the room available early but they set it up with roses and rose petals for our anniversary. This was a lovely touch and so nice to arrive to.
The hotel is beautiful throughout. The pools were nice and relaxing. The pool by the bar is slightly more lively if you prefer but we were happy in the serenity of the other pool. The staff were amazing. The minute we arrived at the pool every day we were greeted by a friendly member of staff and provided with towels (laid out for us) and cold water in a cooler. If we wanted to move our loungers to catch the sun later in the day the staff were there in an instant to assist. Drinks and food were served by the pool throughout the day and the staff were efficient and friendly. We also ate at the pool bar a couple of days and the service there was the same. Oliver was excellent.
The lady and the gentleman on the restaurant reservation desk were great. The lady went above and beyond to get us a table at Bord Eau on our first night and also told the staff it was our anniversary celebration (separate review). Both people that we made reservations through were incredibly helpful.
We visited the spa twice whilst at the hotel and it was amazing. Rose especially was brilliant, really friendly and such a good massage. They also have good deals on at the spa which it is worth asking about.
The boat to the souk/Traders is well worth a ride. It is free for hotel guests and is scenic and calming. The man who looks after the boat was really lovely.
The housekeeping team also deserves a mention as they were no expection to the great service rule. The room was cleaned thoroughly every day and there was turn down service too. We bumped in to the housekeeping staff a couple of times and they always checked we had eevrything we needed.
We had a club room which meant we had access to the Horizon Club Lounge. This was a nice touch and meant pre-dinner drinks with a nice view of the Mosque.
There are a couple of slightly less positive things to say but they are not negative as such as certainly should not give the impression of a hotel that is anything less than 5*. I guess they are merely observations. Firstly, on the last two nights of our stay (Wednesday and Thursday) we were kept awake by loud booming music. I cannot be sure but think this came from the hotel across the water. This is clearly not the fault of the Shangri-La but may affect our room request if we return. Secondly, there could be more information in the rooms about the hotel. A hotel map would have been handy and menus for the restaurants or at least a little more information about them. We also found that the good offers the hotel had on, for the spa and restaurants, were not well advertised in the rooms or restaurants/spa themselves. Thirdly, the pool staff would come around with complimentary watermelon most days. On a couple of days they brought coconut. We said we would like one and it was very nice. We were then presented with a bill of around £9 for the one coconut. This was not expected as it was handed out by the man who hands out the watermelon and it was not make clear it was chargeable. This should have been more transparent. Finally, I think the Horizon Club lounge needs a little work. The atmosphere is a little lacking and, despite being advertised as serving cocktails at happy hour, there were no cocktails. The drinks available were pretty limited and there was no drinks list. It would benefit from a bar in there I think. The food was delicious but more finger food would improve the offering as we did not want curry and pasta before dinner but canapes would have gone down well.
Overall, I cannot recommend this hotel enough. We would certainly return if we travel to Abu Dhabi again. The staff are a credit to the hotel and make the experience truly excellent.
