Traditional Tuscan retreat set on an olive farm between Rome and Florence, with mod rooms, a top-notch restaurant and a spa
Between Florence and Rome, close to the coast in southern Tuscany, Locanda Rossa is a luxe retreat set on a 27-acre olive farm surrounded by gently rolling countryside. The red farmhouse and its outbuildings have been given a warm, contemporary makeover that doesn't stray too far from the Tuscan vernacular; the public spaces and guestrooms are pleasingly uncluttered, with stylish modern furnishings and natural fabrics. Contemporary art, photography and the odd ethnic design detail break up the bright white walls. Outside, the terraces and gardens blend seamlessly into the surrounding olive groves, and the views stretch to the medieval hill town of Capalbio.
Bed and Bath
All 14 guestrooms have the same clean, modern look: hardwood floors and white walls with beige, black and earthy brown accents. The excellent beds are made up with duvets and crisp white linens, and each room has bathrobes and slippers, plus thoughtful extras like tea and coffee trays with biscotti. The bathrooms are supermodern, with rainfall showers, enlarging mirrors and hip C.O. Bigelow toiletries. Many of the rooms come with a patch of private garden or a terrace overlooking the grounds.
The generous public spaces form the heart of the property. In cooler weather, the open-plan living room/reception area has sofas and a crackling fire, and there's a bright bistro-style restaurant for breakfast (fresh-squeezed juice, homemade cakes, and jams and honey from the farm). Chef Valerio Russo, fresh from a four-year stint at the Four Seasons Park Lane, puts a mod twist on classic regional cuisine, using locally procured fish, meat and game, produce from the garden, and lashings of the peppery housemade olive oil. On hot days and balmy evenings kick back by the splendid pool and the adjacent indoor-outdoor loggia, or the new conservatory-style restaurant, or head to the long, covered veranda for a pre-dinner prosecco or a nightcap. There’s a small spa, too. The young, smiling and consistently helpful all-female staff is the icing on the cake.
In the Area
The coastal strip of the southern Maremma is characterized by wind-swept sands and a rolling hinterland dotted with ancient towns and villages. Beach bums can choose between trendy clubs such as La Dogana, with its sunbeds, umbrellas and good restaurant, or miles of virgin sand. Sophisticated little Capalbio is a bike ride away; the Etruscan sites at Pitigliano, Sorano and Sovrana are within easy reach; and chic Argentario, popular with the yachting crowd, is just up the road. The local trattorias serve homemade tortelli and wild boar, and the vineyards produce some seriously good Morellino di Scansano.
