Perfect for style-lovers seeking a cultural kick, Hotel Ilaria & Residenza dell’Alba is a unique four-star boutique hotel in the Tuscan city of Lucca. Comprised of a 14th-century church and the former stables of the 16th-century Villa Bottini, the property is lovingly restored and supremely elegant. The tastefully appointed guest rooms have cozy beds, tiled and glass en-suite bathrooms and all the mod cons, while the split-level (and more splurge-worthy) suites, inside of the historic towers that are in front of the main building, come with dressing rooms, Jacuzzi baths and a lot more living space.
When it comes to Tuscan cities, lovely Lucca may be lesser-known than its more glamorous neighbors, but the so-called City of 100 Churches is one of the country’s most cherished spots for staking out Renaissance architecture and historic monuments. Days can be spent cycling around the city’s walled perimeter, visiting the tiny churches and art galleries, and gazing up in awe at Torre Guinigi (Guinigi Tower) that’s unexpectedly topped with a garden of oak trees. Equally visit-worthy is the Duomo San Martino that houses Volto Santo, the wooden crucifix that Nicodemus believed was carved by an angel.
How to Get There
We stayed in this hotel in May and it has to rank as one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in - lovely staff, perfect location and great facilites. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms clean and spacious. The cafeteria and prosecco are a lovely touch. We can't wait to go back and would recommend this hotel to anyone.
This hotel is located within the ancient walls of the city, but it is sleek, modern, and extremely comfortable. The staff was very friendly, yet professional, and anxious to make your stay great. The rooms were spacious, cool, beds were quite comfortable, and the breakfast was quite delicious, with many choices. You could choose to sit on the patio, or in a glassed top room, lovely! I would give this place an A+!!
a clean, spacious and comfortable room in a well maintained hotel in great location inside the ancient walls. A 2 minute walk to the wall for our early morning walks on top of the wall was a wonderful way to start our day. Excellent air-conditioning, a must when temperature is over 35 degrees. Very good breakfast...staff responded to email inquiries immediately. Negative experience is the out-sourced car transportation from the airport. Hotel arranged for someone to meet us at the Florence Airport. Very nice young man...we were told by email that the cost is 120 Euros. Upon arrival, the driver said the fee was 140 Euros. Since the driver is not an employee of the hotel, we let it go but left an unpleasant taste.
What can I say.. this hotel is amazing. Very close to everything you need. Very clean room with bedding & towels changed everyday. Prosecco and snacks in the afternoon are great. Very Friendly staff would defiantly recommend to anyone.
This hotel is close to the action in Lucca and has many amenities we in the states expect in a high quality hotel. The rooms were spacious (except for the shower), there is a safe in the room, the breakfast was excellent and the staff fantastic. There were always complimentary snacks and drinks available in the lobby, including prosecco and beer in the evenings. Greatly appreciated after a long day of walking, touring and biking.
But the best part was the staff, most of whom had a good command of English and were always willing to help. They gave out maps to places you needed, made reservations, helped us with their free loaner bicycles, and greeted us with a smile.
A very special thanks to Paola who was a lifesaver to us. We had been asked by a friend in the states to make contact with his family in nearby Bientina and only one of the contacts spoke some English and we know extremely little Italian. Despite the awkwardness of calling a stranger, she called for us and explained the situation in Italian. It enabled us to meet them the next day relieved of the awkwardness thanks to Paola going the extra mile for us.
The location is great and it even allows you to get there by car even though much of Lucca is in a limited traffic zone (ZTL) with hefty fines for even accidentally driving in those areas. They have their own parking lot at the hotel. Lucca is a great city and this hotel makes the most of your stay. We would absolutely stay there again.
