A coastal apartment stay at a modern Tuscan resort in a quiet location, along Puntone di Scarlino's marina - includes optional sea views and thoughtful extras

The Lowdown

Tuscany may be famous for its bucolic countryside, but it’s not all rolling hills and shimmering cypress trees. Its coastal region is fringed with beautiful beaches and lapped by the lapis waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the quiet seaside town of Puntone di Scarlino you’ll find Resort Baia Scarlino, offering modern apartments located right on the marina.
Each apartment is stylishly decorated with parquet floors and designer furniture. Large picture windows let in plenty of natural light, while terraces are ideal for taking in the sights over breakfast – prepared in your own kitchen. On site the resort affords a number of pampering facilities, including a spa and a Marina Club with sun loungers and a pool.
Nearby you’ll find plenty of local villages and sights to explore. The port of Livorno, popular with cruise ships and sailors, is just over an hour away; Scarlino has its own marina, so if you’re looking to explore Italy’s coast by boat, then you’re ideally placed to set sail. Head inland and explore the Renaissance city of Florence, or the terracotta-hued city of Siena. Hire a car and the picturesque villages of Tuscany are on your doorstep.

One star experience

We do not recommend this hotel to anyone travelling with children.
Furthermore, it is a great facility but one-star service experience. With the money you spend, you’d expect better.

We had booked for a family consisting of 3 generations (grandparents, and we plus small kids), with a plan to enjoy the pool and some good time on the beach.
We travel a lot, have seen some wonderful places and great hotels, but we never write reviews. Our experience from Resort Baia Scarlino was so appalling that we felt we needed to advice other travellers against choosing this place.
Don’t get me wrong, the hotel facilities and the rooms are really beautiful. It was the customer care and the attitude of the personnel that spoils everything.
We arrived just to discover that they had double booked our two-floor apartment, and they claimed they upgraded us to a larger apartment on one floor, but it had been our choice the provide privacy for the grandparents with the separation of floors.
The kids were anxious to splash into the pool after a long day in the car, but unfortunately the pool had a private party and we were denied access on the first day. Instead, they offered us a free of charge visit to the private beach that is approx 10 minutes walk from the resort.
The hotel website misleadingly advertises a private beach with no mention of the fee involved. You need to know that what is called Casa Felice - Restaurant & Beach Club is the ”beach” and it comes with a charge. The beach is very small by no means suitable for young children since it is rocky and our children during a short stay hurt themselves on the rocks and sea urchins.
Instead, for a great beach with the kids, it is worth a drive to Follonica.
On the day of departure, you won’t be allowed anymore to the pool (or you pay entrance) - this amazes us and we have never seen a high-end hotel telling this to guests who are checking out.
The personnel never apologised, never tried to improve our mood, and kept an attitude. In all fairness, they returned ca 15% of we’d paid for the miss on the room.

Beautiful resort and holiday

As a family of four we booked an apartment with a partial sea view. To be fair the view was more than partial as we had a good view of the marina and out to the sea. Balcony was generously sized and more than enough for the four of us to eat outside. The terrace also included sofa and various plants in oversized pots. Great place to relax.

The apartment was modern clean and finished to a very high standard e.g. Ferragamo toiletries. They provide some basics such as dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, but everything else you can pick up from an excellent onsite supermarket which was well priced. Much larger supermarkets are around 3-4 miles away. That said the restaurants at the marina are excellent, including the take away pizzas. Around €7-9 for really good pizza. The marina club bar and pool was amazing. Looked incredible, the pool was the perfect temperature. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food and drink prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend the fruit platter served on a bed of ice.

There is a beach around 5 minutes walk away which is worth a visit.

We absolutely loved Baia Scarlino and would return at the drop of a hat.

We stayed as a family of 4 (kids 3 and 5) in a duplex apartment called 'Emma' and we had the most wonderful time. Accommodation was excellent, views amazing and the pool scene was divine. We were made to feel very welcome. Pool staff met every need and worked tirelessly in 40' heat!
Lots of options to eat. Ice cream parlour is out of this world and the added treat of love entertainment from bands was a great way to finish if he evening.
We can't wait to find an excuse to go back!
