A coastal apartment stay at a modern Tuscan resort in a quiet location, along Puntone di Scarlino's marina - includes optional sea views and thoughtful extras

The Lowdown

Tuscany may be famous for its bucolic countryside, but it’s not all rolling hills and shimmering cypress trees. Its coastal region is fringed with beautiful beaches and lapped by the lapis waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the quiet seaside town of Puntone di Scarlino you’ll find Resort Baia Scarlino, offering modern apartments located right on the marina.
Each apartment is stylishly decorated with parquet floors and designer furniture. Large picture windows let in plenty of natural light, while terraces are ideal for taking in the sights over breakfast – prepared in your own kitchen. On site the resort affords a number of pampering facilities, including a spa and a Marina Club with sun loungers and a pool.
Nearby you’ll find plenty of local villages and sights to explore. The port of Livorno, popular with cruise ships and sailors, is just over an hour away; Scarlino has its own marina, so if you’re looking to explore Italy’s coast by boat, then you’re ideally placed to set sail. Head inland and explore the Renaissance city of Florence, or the terracotta-hued city of Siena. Hire a car and the picturesque villages of Tuscany are on your doorstep.

Beautiful resort and holiday

As a family of four we booked an apartment with a partial sea view. To be fair the view was more than partial as we had a good view of the marina and out to the sea. Balcony was generously sized and more than enough for the four of us to eat outside. The terrace also included sofa and various plants in oversized pots. Great place to relax.

The apartment was modern clean and finished to a very high standard e.g. Ferragamo toiletries. They provide some basics such as dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, but everything else you can pick up from an excellent onsite supermarket which was well priced. Much larger supermarkets are around 3-4 miles away. That said the restaurants at the marina are excellent, including the take away pizzas. Around €7-9 for really good pizza. The marina club bar and pool was amazing. Looked incredible, the pool was the perfect temperature. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food and drink prices were very reasonable. Would definitely recommend the fruit platter served on a bed of ice.

There is a beach around 5 minutes walk away which is worth a visit.

We absolutely loved Baia Scarlino and would return at the drop of a hat.

We stayed as a family of 4 (kids 3 and 5) in a duplex apartment called 'Emma' and we had the most wonderful time. Accommodation was excellent, views amazing and the pool scene was divine. We were made to feel very welcome. Pool staff met every need and worked tirelessly in 40' heat!
Lots of options to eat. Ice cream parlour is out of this world and the added treat of love entertainment from bands was a great way to finish if he evening.
We can't wait to find an excuse to go back!

Nice location - but partially run down

A very nice location at the Marina of Scarlino - we were lucky to have a nice 1st floor self catering apartment with a lovely terrace. The views are stunning and the sunsets spectacular. It's a very quiet place (made us sleep long...). However there are a few drawbacks, which does not let this location deserve a 'very good' or even an 'excellent'.
A few examples: Staff at the pool was arrogant and not very helpful - we did not feel welcomed and were treated arrogant (esp. a young blonde lady (salvataggio) at our first day). Later there was another guy which was realy friendly, but management must make sure all of their staff are friendly. Also next to our appartment there was an abandoned appartment, which was probably not used for several months. This leads to wall etc. not being maintained and windows covered with paper and therefore it also leaves a bit of bad impression if you're just next to this place. Some other areas were also not maintained well and the surrundings could get a bit more attention by the maintenance team (glass laying around from a broken cabinet near parking; dirty etc.)
Also we were under the impression, that the place had a bit a problem to be fully booked - so it was partially deserted maybe because of season end time - anyway it was still hot and 30° warm summer time at the end of August. The restaurant near the pool for breakfast is a nice place with friendly staff - I liked the recommendation for the caffe Macchiatone (large espresso with some milk)
There are some nice hikes starting just next to the hotel leading to nice beaches without any traffic (Cala Violina) - takes half an hour to walk there however. But very nice...

Excellent Views & Lovely Place To Relax

We stayed at Resort Baia Scarlino for 2 nights, during our stay in Tuscany. The suite was designed and decorated to a very high standard with kitchen facilities and a balcony with a stunning view of the Marina. The resort itself has a few restaurants and a pool area, but nothing much more and you will definitely need a car to explore the surrounding areas. We could not really fault our stay here and would recommend to friends.

Burgler in the middle of the night / it was an employee of the resort
Reviewed 4 years ago

September 2015 – We looked forward to stay 4 beautiful days at Baia Scarlino, but unfortunately (luckily), after one night we decided to leave this place and never ever come back again. We literally passed the night of our horror. The story began with a beautiful dinner evening which we had at a restaurant close by. It was around 23.00 o’clock when we must have left the restaurant and returned to our apartment (Bodot 28). Everything seems quiet and peaceful. We made ourselves ready for bed time. Around 23.45 o’clock (my husband and I slept by the time already), my husband got waked up by some slowly clicking noises of the door. Not really realizing, while sleeping, what those clicking noises meant, he stood up and ran towards the door just in time to shut it! Within those 2 seconds while running and shutting the door, he realized that a burglar gained access to our apartment with the key! The noise caused by the speed of shutting the door back into it’s frame made me wake up…

Anxious and still shocked by this horror scenario, my husband opened the to make sure the burglar has gone. Fortunate or not the burglar was shocked too and so he still stood outside of our door stumbling some Italian words to him. I guess he must have thought that we were not at home, so asked my husband thinks like: “Did you call me?” (how the heck should we have called you, when we even do not know who you are?) or “Have you lost your apartment keys?” (No because we are inside of our apartment, and after dinner we were able to open the door). I really have to say that those questions in the middle of the night are really strange. But a burglar caught in this situation, he must have asked such stupid questions… So talking to that burglar (he told us he was a “ranger”) we understood that this person was not expecting us at home at all and he really wanted to gain access to our apartment. Why am I so confident about this: because each apartment has a door bell and a personal gate before you get to the main entrance door. And also I think I do not have to mention that knocking would have been another option to wake us up and make us aware that we might have lost our key.

Both of us were left in a very horrible condition after this confrontation and so we called the emergency number provided by the hotel. Forget it to get any help from this number because no one picks up, hence we called the police in the middle of the night. They told us that they will try to find this ranger, but they never found him. No wonder!

After having spent a horrible night we wanted to confront the reception with this case and tried to immediately check out (reception opens only from 09.00am onwards) and leave this place for good. The reception told us that the ranger had written an email by saying that he is in position of two keys and that he does not need them anymore. Funny enough that the reception could not tell us more. So we checked out and left for good.

So we definitely can NOT recommend this place. We won’t come back and it’s such a shame that something like this happened there (the door is made out of steel and about 10 cm think). Honestly, this experience changed my whole life. I never felt so scared and unsafe in a place. Thank you Baia Scarlino for having learnt me this lesson!
