Overview

An elegant hotel, built in a former convent and full of old-world charm, just fifteen minutes from the Duomo

The Lowdown

Renowned as the Cradle of the Renaissance, Florence is bursting at the seams with traditional architecture, historic works of art and famous sights. But there’s more to this city than the Statue of David, the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio – though these are fine places to start. Look a little closer, and you’ll find that the streets are alive with a youthful spirit, from designer shops and modern-art galleries to experimental cuisine and forward-thinking fashion.
NH Firenze Anglo American is situated right in the middle of all this magical energy. A former convent, this luxurious hotel retains its old-world charm, adorned with antique furniture, Florentine paintings in gold-gilded frames and a stained-glass ceiling that stretches across the lobby. There are plenty of relaxing spots to soak up the 19th-century character in this hideaway, from the elegant and comfortable seating area in the lobby to the dappled shade of the outdoor patio.

Rooms

At 190 square feet, the Superior rooms are large enough to fit a small sitting area, a king-sized bed, a dresser and a television. The rooms are tastefully decorated, and features such as heavy drapes, dramatic headboards and wrought-iron balconies create an intimate ambience.

Dining

A lavish buffet breakfast is served every morning at the hotel’s restaurant. Fresh fruit juices, pastries, cold cuts and cheeses are available, and the Schiacciata Toscana, a local specialty similar to focaccia bread, is a real treat. The hotel’s bar, with its high-backed leather chairs and dark-wood furnishings, is open during the daytime and evenings for drinks and light bites.

Location

The hotel sits within walking distance of many important sites, and the river Arno is just a stone’s throw away. Right around the corner, you’ll find the Teatro Communale and the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella, the city’s principal Dominican church and the first great basilica in Florence. The Santa Maria Novella railway station is also just a short walk away, providing access to the rest of Tuscany.

The Angelo American is a classic older property with charm. The highlight was the amazing service level provided by the staff at reception desk. They are helpful, informed and efficient. Further it is their pleasure to help their guests with a smile!

An equal highlight was the breakfast with a wonderful selection of locally grown & freshly prepared foods. Again offered by friendly and smiling staff.

Location is a ten minute brisk walk from the train station & the American Consulate. However the walk to the centre along the river took about 45 minutes so bring your most comfortable walking shoes. Our pedometer indicated that we walked 30 miles during our four day stay.

Rooms are spacious, clean and appointed with some vintage furniture. The bed was state of the art comfortable and most appreciated. However the overall appearance was less than perfect due to paint chips in baseboard and trim areas in the hallways and room interiors.

Overall the Anglo American provided a wonderful experience and I would be pleased to stay there again.
