The Review
Built in 1910 (and remaining open even through both world wars), the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is one of the best still-standing examples of Italian Art Nouveau architecture. To walk its stately halls and climb its grand staircases is to be transported to an era of glamour, when wealthy Europeans regularly roamed these halls at the turn of the last century. The 90 guest rooms are richly decorated in distinctive shades of yellow, blue and green, and they feature high ceilings, molded stucco, antique furniture and large bathrooms. The rest of the hotel is similarly decorated with opulent chandeliers, heavy, ornate drapes, a classic billiards room, fine crystal stemware in the dining rooms and large vases overflowing with flowers everywhere. But, remarkably, there’s nothing stuffy about the place. The exterior may look like a museum, but the interior is hardly quiet or snooty, and the staff is fun and friendly. During the summer months, Monday night pizza parties in the garden by the pool are a favorite among the guests, who munch on classic wood-oven Margherita pizzas by candlelight. For fine dining, you can head to La Terrazza, where the menu changes with the season to make the most of local produce and fresh fish. And tucked away downstairs is L’Escale, a classic fondue establishment set in a wine cellar. The outdoor spaces are equally magnificent, including a beautifully maintained two-acre park and even a manmade beach, right on the lakeshore, where you can kick back on a chaise longue under the sun.

How to Get There

Flights are available to Milano Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Milan Linate International Airport (LIN) from major U.S. and U.K. cities on a variety of carriers. Private transfers to/from MXP, about 52 miles away, and to/from LIN, about 60 miles away, are available for approximately $260 per car, each way. Additionally, taxi transfers to/from MXP are approximately $260 per taxi, each way. Most guests rent vehicles for a cheaper transfer, and arrangements with public transfers by train or boat can be assisted through the property; prices vary.
