What To Know
- This is a luxurious city hotel, great for a short stay to explore Thessaloniki, but not for a longer holiday
- Good for business travelers and grown-up couples, but not so perfect for families
- The Excelsior’s restaurant and bars are adequate, but there’s a much bigger choice of places to eat and drink just a few steps from the door
- No pool, and the nearest beach is miles away, but Elemis spa treatments help to compensate
- Nearby Plateia Aristotelous (Aristotle Square) is occasionally the scene of noisy rallies by opponents of the Greek government’s economic austerity measures
- Free WiFi
- Parking On Site

How to Get There
Overall, The Excelsior is a good choice - especially considering the options in Thessaloniki - but it's not the 5 star hotel it bills itself as. My husband and I recently stayed for 4 nights. A breakdown of the pros & cons:
-Great location. It's in the heart of the city, making all sights easily accessible by foot. We walked everywhere: the White Tower, the museums past the White Tower, Ano Poli, etc.
-Clean, comfortable rooms that are made up by an excellent housecleaning staff.
-Food options on property. The free breakfast includes a variety of options, and the servers are sweet. The same staff works at the hotel's restaurant, Be, which offers an eclectic menu of good food.
-If check-in time is 2pm, then your room should be ready at 2pm. While it was nice of the hotel concierge to offer us free lunch at their restaurant while we waited for our room, it was frustrating to have to wait until 2:45 to check-in after we'd been traveling for 15 hours.
-The walls are NOT soundproof. Our room had a door to the adjoining room (which we didn't use since we didn't know the people next to us), and we heard every noise they made - talking, slamming doors, using the bathroom, etc.
-The AC worked intermittently. We couldn't figure out why it would sometimes turn on and sometimes turn off, but AC really feels like a must on 90+ degree days in Thessaloniki summers.
The Excelsior is located in the heart of Thessaloniki, within a short walking distance of most attractions. The hotel has a charming old world feel but is extremely modern. The room we had was very clean, spacious and modern with a vintage décor style. It included a pretty terrace where we could sit and have a glass of wine. The front desk staff was very welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful. The breakfast was wonderful and served at a very pretty enclosed rooftop terrace which had a modern vintage garden feel. The serving staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. We would absolutely consider staying here again when visiting Thessaloniki.
The Excelsior offered us true, unadulterated luxury, without any compromise. The fine historic building was masterfully re-designed for modern use some ten years ago and has been beautifully maintained since. Our room (#41) was spotlessly clean, spacious, beautifully appointed in a minimalist design without any clutter but with everything that one needs to feel at home. Its unusual arrangement with the shower in a large alcove off the bedroom (apparently adapted from a bay window) rather than within the toilet/washbasin room worked beautifully. The room was also very quiet. The location is in the heart of downtown Thessaloniki, next to the best shopping and dining. The hotel is not too big, and the staff were wonderful - there is a human scale and a human touch to this place.
One expects a well-stocked minibar in a hotel like this, but not what we also got: a complimentary bottle of excellent Chalkidiki wine and delicious sweets and cheeses. The breakfast was fabulous, too.
We will definitely be back as soon as we can.
A great hotel in the center of Thessaloniki. All the major attractions are within walking distance. The rooms are very nice and clean. The service is perfect and they got an answer for every request and question,
Solid 4 star hotel. The hotel has an excellent buffet breakfast, with eggs cooked to your liking, and coffee made fresh as ordered. The breakfast staff was polite and attentive, without being intrusive. The rooms however, are quite small. In particular, the ‘bathrooms’ consist of only the shower with frosted glass surrounding them. It was cramped and not very comfortable to shower in. The hotel provided a welcome bottle of wine and chocolate dipped strawberries upon arrival, which were lovely. There is a ground flour restaurant associated with the hotel, which was good, but not great, in terms of choice. Finally, I found the reception staff to be very variable. There were a couple of welcoming ones, and a couple who were aloof. Overall, it is a nice hotel.
