There aren’t too many better places to enjoy these vistas from than Electra Palace Thessaloniki. 5 Star Hotel in Thessaloniki, Greece – October 2019
Great City Hotel: Located in the middle of the city’s activities. The 5 km long sidewalk by the bay is about 200 meters from the Hotel, the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus starts from approx 1 km from the Hotel, both boat tours start approx 500 meter from the Hotel, and the high-end shopping area is just around the corner from the Hotel. The Hotel has easy access to the Restaurant/Bar and pool areas by elevator. + The Hotel clientele and ambience is High Class. The + Hotel is clean, quiet, the inside is nicely decorated and the + Hotel is well lighted at night. - The Room furniture is somewhat old fashion.
+ Reception and Check-In: + Check-in was quick and easy. + Reception personnel made eye contact so I knew I was next to be served. + Luggage service to and from rooms was quiet, good, and effective. + We received as a couple, two Room Key Cards and a password for the free Internet without asking; avoiding any arguments with my partner. We received the room we paid for with a sea view. + Our room was on the 6th Floor near the outdoor pool and the Roof Garden Restaurant/Bar. - We were not offered a welcome drink, even though there was something to drink and eat on a table at the end of the check-in counter. + We were offered a 15 minute massage coupon, but we never had time to use it.
+ Staff informative and helpful: + The Hotel Reception always had what we needed: Towels for the beach, Band-Aid for a foot blister, information about tours and where to go to connect with the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus and the port Boat Tours. + They responded to both of my pre-arrival emails with informative information. + The Hotel also informed us about the one day bus strike, which occurred on our third day while we were there.
+ Lobby: Just the right size for a City Hotel; clean, friendly, and nicely decorated. There was a board in the lobby with a digital clock and also with the meal times posted on it. + Security was discreetly but always present in the lobby. - One of the two elevators worked fine the other elevator made strange noises and shook as it went from floor-to-floor.
+ Room: Overall good, clean, and efficient. Our room was a medium size room with a sliding door to the balcony. +/- An effective room key card lock system that opened the room door but to close the door one had to pull the room door close hard, otherwise it would not close.
Atmosphere: + Room Lighting was effective and adequate, the + room flooring was wood and white tile in bathroom, and – the wall paper that was starting to come off the wall. Also, there was air conditioning with + temperature controls. + The room window / terrace door had 2 curtains; both which could completely covered the window. One curtain was to keep all the light out and another curtain was to just let the light in, but other eyes out. There was + no noise through the wall from adjacent rooms or outside from room service carts.
Amenities: The room had 2 beds, 2 side bed shelves, lights on both sides of the bed, a desk, + a TV, a Telephone, +/- a small but effective Refrigerator/Mini Bar, a + Safe that was easy to use (no extra cost), +/- only 1 luggage stand, 2 trash cans, + a lighted closet + with a mirror on the closet door and + cushions for the balcony chairs stored on one of the shelves in the closet. - No iron or ironing board. +/- No Beach Towels in room but clean, different colored (than room towels) beach towels were folded and available in the outdoor pool area.
+ Bed. + Our room had 2 comfortable beds with two pillows, as requested. - The two beds were pushed together but they moved apart with the smallest of movements. - There was an open space under the bed, where someone could hide in the room. + One blanket per bed.
+ TV: + Big screen TV with remote control. + International Channels English, German, French, Italian, Greek, etc.
Suggestion: Maybe a lounge chair on the room balcony instead of just chairs.
+/- Bathroom: +/- Narrow bathroom layout which was OK. + Old Hotel but bathroom had been remolded with bathtub/shower, wash sink, bidet, and toilet. - Bathtub/shower was at little high to get in and out of but OK. The + Toilet flush was quiet. + Lighting in bathroom very good. - The hair dryer had little or no power. + Bidet with Tampon plastic bags. + Sink Mirror.
+ Accessories in the bathroom: facial soap, body wash, shampoo, razor with shave cream, shower cap, bath sponge, various cosmetic items, bath robes and slippers, toilet paper, etc.
+ Breakfast Buffet 7th Floor or Roof Garden – Orizontes Restaurant and Bar 06:30-10:30 (Early breakfast available upon request and the Hotel welcomes external guests). Terrific! Open air breakfast, up above the street level. Great view, good food, wonderful atmosphere with + taped music which matched my taste in music and was just right!
+ The Food selection for the Breakfast Buffett was good. While they had +/- no made-to-order eggs and the - scrambles eggs were runny, they did have other scrambled eggs with ham that were cooked hard and tasted better. + They also had small fried round hash brown potatoes in paddy form that were also good. - The tater tots (potatoes) where not so good but OK. + Small donuts and sweet cakes. + Plus, sliced meats, sliced cheeses, salmon, yoghurt, and several types of bread (including white and wheat bread) next to the toaster.
- Unfortunately, all the hot food at the buffet was pre-cooked (including the eggs) and all the pre-cooked food was cold by the time I got back to my table.
- Breakfast Drinks: The waitressed asked every morning what I wanted to drink; I said “a cold a glass of milk”. And every day they brought me a cold glass of milk. Then on our last day the waitressed asked what we wanted to drink, my partner said, “coffee” and she got coffee at our table, but when I said “a cold glass of milk, the waitress said get it at the Buffet.” Why do they change the standard? And why do they ask me what I want to drink, if they are not going to serve it. Don’t serve my drink to me at breakfast for 3 days and then tell me on the 4th day, to get it at the Buffet. + Overall waiters/waitresses did a great job. They also had + freshly squeezed orange juice every day (also served to the table) - simply Great!
+ The Restaurant/Buffet lighting was bright enough that I could easily see all the food or read all the sign next to food. + The distance from Buffet to any table was a short distance. + Aisle traffic pattern and space between tables/chairs was OK, but not if you are disabled. +/- While they had mustard at the Buffet, they did not have any ketchup. + Food items were in a logical location on the Buffet, e.g. butter by the bread and mustard by the sliced meats and sliced cheeses. Since, people are creatures of habit, they like everything in the same logical location every time, so they can easily find it. - Waiters/waitresses were courteous to Hotel guest concerning traffic flow. + 4x and 2x person tables allow for more flexibility in accommodating different size groups and seating more people per meal.
Lunch and/or Dinner: We did not eat at the Hotel Restaurant nor did we have a drink at the Hotel Bar for lunch or dinner, so I cannot report on this.
+/- Housekeeping: Overall Good. + The maid made-up room, when we were gone for the day.
- Every night between 19:00 and 20:00 the maid would come by, knock on our room door, and ask us if everything was OK. By then, I was lying in bed relaying watching TV and would say yes, everything was OK. This happened every night, until our last night, when we were headed downstairs to the lobby at this time and we noticed that this same maid was putting chocolate pralines in each room. Why didn’t they say that they had chocolate pralines for us every night, instead of asking if everything was OK?
- Green Environmental Program: Like most hotels they have a Green Environment Program where only the towels on the floor will be replaced. However, the maid replaced every towel regardless of where it was located in the bathroom. She also threw out a small empty plastic coke bottle with refund on it, which we did not put in the trash and wanted to refill and use again for our day trips.
- Parking: Unfortunately like most City Hotels, this Hotel does not own its own parking lot. However, they do cooperate with two different parking lots. And one can easily arrive in front of the Hotel and the valet service will help one with parking their car.
+/- No in-house shops for personal sundry products but + both in the room and at the reception desk they have small personal sundry items that might be required and + there are shops just outside in Aristotelous Square.
+ Luggage service: Quiet, good and effective.
+ Room Towel service and beach towels for the pools.
- No Ice Machine in the Hotel.
+ Internet: + Free Internet and we received a password at check-in for the Internet without asking for one. However, we did not use the Internet while at the Hotel, so I cannot report on it.
+ Outdoor pool on the Roof Garden (7th Floor) and an indoor pool in the basement (-1 Floor). The outdoor pool is a typical City Hotel pool, small (but effective). + The Outdoor pool area was clean. The nice thing about a plastic room key card is one does not need to worry about getting it wet, it is water proof. + No Beach Towels in room but there are clean, different colored (than room towels) folded beach towels available in the outdoor pool area. + No Beach Towel Mafia to have to pay for a beach towel. The outdoor pool on the Roof Garden is behind the Restaurant/Bar. - The way to the outdoor pool area is through the Restaurant/Bar area, which is a chokepoint for foot traffic. The outdoor pool and area has a few lounge chairs (not enough) and the pool and the area was small typical for a City Hotel and without any shade. + The only shade via the sun umbrellas. +/- Nice aqua blue colored pool bottom but no special decoration in the bottom of the pool. Outdoor pool was not heated but the water was clear and the temperature naturally heated by the sun. + The area is quiet. We didn’t use the indoor pool, so I cannot report on it.
Security: + Room Key Card without the room number. And security in the lobby.
Disabled: + Level entrance to the lobby and elevators to every floor. - Because of space between the tables and the chokepoints in the Orizontes Restaurant and Bar area it would be difficult but not impossible for those in a wheelchair to access both the Breakfast Buffet and the outdoor pool.
Suggestions: + Sell Electra Hotel products with the Hotel’s name on it e.g. Beach towels, etc.
+ City Hotel vs. Country Hotel: The City Hotels are close to the city attractions and shopping areas, and the Country Hotels are close to the beaches and nature areas. City Hotels rarely have parking and if they do it cost to park but being in the city close to the city attractions, one does need a car. The Country Hotels have parking, usually free, but they are far from the city attractions and close to the beaches and nature areas. Picking the right hotel is always a compromise between both extremes. The City Hotels have either no pool or a small pool area and most Country Hotels have an outdoor pool and maybe an inside pool.
Liked: Open Air Breakfast Buffet on the 7th Floor Roof Garden, Orizontes Restaurant; simply Terrific! + The Hotel Reception always had what we needed: Towels for the beach, Band-Aid for a foot blister, information about tours, where to go to connect with the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus and the port to take both Boat Tours. + Our Room was exactly what we expected and paid for. + We received two room cards without having to ask for two room cards when we checked-in. The water proof Key Cards, are without the room number on the card for security.
Didn’t like: Pre-prepared food from buffet cold once one is back at their seat. Room Service threw out a small empty plastic coke bottle with refund on it, which we did not put in the trash and wanted to refill and use again for our day trips. - One of the two elevators worked fine the other elevator made strange noises and shook as it went from floor-to-floor.
Overall, we liked this Hotel and only for a few issues that could make it better, if we are ever in Thessaloniki, Greece again we would stay here again. And if we are ever in Greece again we would consider staying at another Electra Hotel elsewhere in Greece.
We stayed here for 4 nights. It is a beautiful hotel in a lovely location. The standard rooms are a little tired but very clean and have full amenities. The breakfast is a buffet and the choice excellent. There is a wonderful roof garden with spectacular views. This is where the restaurant is located. There is an outdoor swimming pool on the roof garden too but for part of our stay was not in use. However it’s a lovely place just to sit and read and relax. The staff are all extremely helpful and attentive. We did not use the spa facilities so cannot comment.
First of all it is not a palace but a four star hotel max. You have old stage decoration. Not modern at all. We did not have a room with view on the sea but with view on the roof with all the aircon of the hotel and the cheminee just under our window which was blowing 24h/7days. very confortable to hear this bloudy noice all day and all night. We had twin bed on wheels! very confortable when you are a couple and you wake up in the middle of the night because your bed is leaving you. about Sound proofing in your room is better to not speak about. from the outside as from the inside. if you want to sleep late in the morning, sorry but it is not possible. The spa, i do not know if we can call that a spa. A swimming pool where you can not swim because not deep enough. only 2 sun beds!! A hammam where you can be 2 skinny person max. sauna was not working.... Same for the swimming pool on garden roof. not deep enough to swim and anyway often with pigeon all around having good time. not really welcoming to go inside. i do not recommend at all this hotel for your journey in Thessalonique. They charge you the rate of a palace but with services and confort of a normal hotel.
