Mandarava Resort and Spa Karon Beach
What We Love
- Daily breakfast is included in the Jetsetter rate
- Making a splash in one of the three lagoon-like swimming pools
- The fantastic and very affordable Cheeva spa; try the hot stone massage and look out for some terrific special offers in the morning
- Spacious, modern, comfortable rooms
- The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to/from the beach
What To Know
- A 10 percent service charge per night will be collected at the Jetsetter checkout
- It's positioned on a hillside, and there are a lot of stairs; if mobility is an issue, this might not be the best choice
- Rooms in the Mango section (near the pool bar and restaurant) can pick up noise from passers-by, so light sleepers might want to avoid these
- Free WiFi
- Parking On Site
On a hillside overlooking Karon Bay, the Mandarava Resort and Spa is an attractive collection of 39 bungalows housing 130 rooms. Waterfalls laced with orchids, ponds filled with water lilies and elevated walkways separate the villas and the public areas, giving it the feel of a cheerful tropical village. The interiors are very much contemporary Thai, though, with lots of pale stone columns, dark wood and swirly rattan furniture.
Bed and Bath
Guestrooms are split into three categories: ground-floor Tropicana Superior Rooms, first-floor Panoramic Deluxe Rooms and the stand-alone Deluxe Horizon Rooms, which have vaulted ceilings, large bathrooms and long balconies. Whichever you opt for, you’ll find cleanly decorated spaces with bright white linens, simple wooden furnishings, shimmery silver curtains and wide-screen TVs. Cotton robes, beach bags, flip-flops and a reasonably priced minibar provide additional homey touches. Not all rooms have sea views, so if this is a priority for you, ask for one in the Pomelo section.
The hotel’s one and only restaurant, Chom Talay, resides in a giant pavilion at the heart of the resort. A hearty hot and cold breakfast is served in the mornings, and a menu of European and Thai favorites throughout the rest of the day. For light bites, head to the Sala Bar which pairs cocktails and tapas-style dishes. Unsurprisingly, the swim-up Mango Bar is a popular place for guests to congregate, as is the sweet teak and mosaic-tiled Cheeva spa.
In the Area
Karon is one of Phuket’s most popular beach towns, and it has all the trappings you might expect: seaside restaurants, thatch-roofed bars and outdoor massage parlors. If you’re looking for something a bit more high-octane, head toward the roaring nightlife of Patong. Or if high culture is more your cup of tea, then it’s worth hopping over to nearby Phuket town for a wander around its Chinese temples, Portuguese shop houses and cool new boutiques and cafés; try the China Inn Café for lunch, and Suay for a contemporary Thai dinner.
How to Get There
The staff were commendable with their service. Very helpful with all queries and made us feel absolutely comfortable. The staff even knew us by our names which gave a very personal touch. The facilities in the property were well maintained. Would definitely go again.
The resort itself is beautiful with a very tropical feel. The room was very spacious and clean - we were on the 2nd story and enjoyed the vaulted ceilings. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of cuisine.
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pool areas were well kept and pretty quiet, which we enjoyed.
We had a late flight and the hotel allowed us to use their facilities and hold our luggage after checkout which was nice - even including allowing us to shower before leaving for the airport. This was very nice given how hot it was - a very pleasant surprise to be able to freshen up.
The resort itself is great - the only downside would be the location. It is a little bit of a hike to get to the beach / major storefront areas in Karon. The resort does however offer a shuttle (we admittedly did not use it), so perhaps if you timed your trips to the beach/town accordingly this becomes a non-issue.
Have just had a great 5 night stay at the Mandarava Hotel. The room is spacious, clean, large comfortable bed and great toiletries.
The staff are great, very helpful and friendly. Resort facilities are good, lovely pool just outside our villa.
The restaurant is spacious and has a large selection of food for breakfast, everything you could want from toast to noodle soup to curry, all freshly made.
It’s situated on a hill and there’s a lot of stairs to get to the villa, however staff are on hand to give you a ride to your villa in a tuktuk if needed. It’s a 10 minute leisurely walk into Karon Beach which has a great range of shops and restaurants.
If coming back to Karon Beach I would definitely return to the Mandarava.
