Family-run retreat in laid-back Kamala with an organic spa and an infinity pool overlooking the Andaman Sea

The Lowdown

A 30-minute drive from the bustle of Phuket town, the family-run Ayara Kamala Resort showcases Thailand’s natural assets, from the fresh seafood served at the Cradle restaurant and the organic treatments at the spa to the Andaman Sea views from the infinity pool. Local designer Khun V has created 42 stylish guestrooms that range from simple but chic balcony rooms to vast Grand Pool Villas. And Khun V’s daughter, who trained at the Swiss Hotel Management School, brings expert hospitality skills to the mix. Hot days and sultry nights see guests cooling off at the Ayara Parlour (which has a 360-degree glass-walled upper deck), at the quintessentially Thai spa or at the Overflow bar, where cocktails are a specialty. Guests can also sign up for scuba diving, cooking classes and visits to local tailors.

In the Area

If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for in Phuket, then Kamala is just the spot, with its villagey atmosphere and a smattering of seafood shacks and shops. The top place to dine is the low-key, family-run Charoen Seafood restaurant, which has been serving the freshest seafood for the past 20 years. Families will enjoy the fantastically kitsch Phuket Fantasea theme park. If high culture is more your cup of tea, it’s worth hopping over to nearby Phuket town for a wander around its Chinese temples, Portuguese shop houses and cool new boutiques and cafés; try the China Inn Café for lunch and Suay for a contemporary Thai dinner.

Lovely private villas.

Enjoyed our stay here, it was lovely and quiet with good facilities. We particularly liked the friendly restaurant staff like Kit. They went out of their way to make sure we were happy with our food etc. One slightly negative point was that the hotel room service staff took away our bath robes the day before we left- I assume to stop theft but this added a slightly sour note to our otherwise enjoyable stay.

Just wonderful

This place gets my full recommendation. We spent 8 nights and it is exactly what we wanted: beautiful, quiet, attentive service, AMAZING food, big rooms and good location. Everything there is well organized. Really good Spa too. Wonderful and thanks!

The perfect honeymoon

I had the pleasure of staying at the Ayara Kamala resort from 3/25 to 3/28 at one of their Grand Pool Villa Ocean View for our honeymoon and it was perfect. The resort itself is built inside a valley. And where many resorts, the main building will be front and center, is actually off to the side and the rest of the valley is dedicated to their private villas which provides incredible ocean views. Our villa was amazing and provided a mostly private guest experience.

While the location of the resort is not close to more of the more frequented beaches, a bus shuttle to Kamala beach or a quick cab to Patong will get you the beach life you desire. But if the beach is not for you, then there isn't much of a reason to leave the resort unless you want to go shopping or experience the nightlife.

The staff are welcoming and helpful. Dew in particular stands out as amazing and multi-lingual.

The breakfast buffet is excellent and the food, buffet and made to order was delicious.

We used the spa twice - once during our stay there, and then once on our last day before heading to the airport. The spa and their staff is top notch. Expect to pay much more than the usual Thai massage parlors on the streets, but the difference in quality and service is worth it. We had massages every day in Phuket and opted to visit the spa before we headed to the airport we loved their service so much.

If I had to lodge a complaint, it is to keep the restaurant terrace smoke free. I understand that there is a large number of tourists who smoke and smoke while dining, but it really takes everything away from the dining experience.

This is the newest and expensive hotel in Phuket, the location is not really convenient, but the hotel view is very beautiful. The staff of the hotel is very professional, especially the staff ”Chai”. No matter what position he is, Kamala shuttle bus or restaurant, he is smile every day, take care of the guests, let me and my friends really experience and enjoy a great holiday. The hotel's facilities are well maintained. If you don't live in a detached house, the hotel's infinity pool is very good. The breakfast at the restaurant is very delicious, in addition to the food in the buffet area, there is also an optional menu for guests to choose from.

Decent hotel

We stayed at Ayara for 2 nights. The hotel itself is beautiful and the view from the pool area is outstanding. The employees who worked the front desk were also wonderful and always willing to help. The breakfast was outstanding, as well as the lunch at Cradle restaurant. We stayed in an ocean view room - the view was great, but the bathroom wasnt very clean. We didn’t do our research about the location of the hotel prior to arriving, so we didn’t know that the resort was far from the beach. You can take a free shuttle to Kamala Beach (only during certain times - 150 baht if you want to go outside hours). Just a heads up..Kamala beach is definitely not the nicest beach on Phuket. We only went to the beach once and mostly utilized the pool (which Was amazing).

We had one really bad incident at the hotel, which left both my husband and I fuming. We called the hotel to send a driver to come pick us up at Kamala Beach. He was driving pretty irratically and ended up crashing the car into the security gate at the hotel. The car cracked the gate in half and got stuck in the car. The security guard and another employee witnessed the crash - instead of asking if we were okay or anything..one employee started taking photos and the other one started trying to fix the gate. We jumped out and THEY STILL MADE US PAY FOR THE RIDE. We understand accidents happen and I genuinely felt bad for the driver because he was so young, but the situation after the crash was very unacceptable - we will not be returning.
