Overview

Family-run retreat in laid-back Kamala with an organic spa and an infinity pool overlooking the Andaman Sea

The Lowdown

A 30-minute drive from the bustle of Phuket town, the family-run Ayara Kamala Resort showcases Thailand’s natural assets, from the fresh seafood served at the Cradle restaurant and the organic treatments at the spa to the Andaman Sea views from the infinity pool. Local designer Khun V has created 42 stylish guestrooms that range from simple but chic balcony rooms to vast Grand Pool Villas. And Khun V’s daughter, who trained at the Swiss Hotel Management School, brings expert hospitality skills to the mix. Hot days and sultry nights see guests cooling off at the Ayara Parlour (which has a 360-degree glass-walled upper deck), at the quintessentially Thai spa or at the Overflow bar, where cocktails are a specialty. Guests can also sign up for scuba diving, cooking classes and visits to local tailors.

In the Area

If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for in Phuket, then Kamala is just the spot, with its villagey atmosphere and a smattering of seafood shacks and shops. The top place to dine is the low-key, family-run Charoen Seafood restaurant, which has been serving the freshest seafood for the past 20 years. Families will enjoy the fantastically kitsch Phuket Fantasea theme park. If high culture is more your cup of tea, it’s worth hopping over to nearby Phuket town for a wander around its Chinese temples, Portuguese shop houses and cool new boutiques and cafés; try the China Inn Café for lunch and Suay for a contemporary Thai dinner.

Outstanding Accommodation at the romantic Ayara Kamala
Reviewed 2 weeks ago

My husband and I celebrated our silver wedding anniversary during our 3 night, 4 day stay at The Ayara Kamala in mid May. This trip was part of a two month holiday in Phuket and the Gulf of Thailand where we visited every beach and stayed at some of the most remarkable properties. Since we saw so many first rate hotels and impeccable service, I feel justified in making some comments on this hotel.

This property is very expensive and exclusive. We were able to get an affordable rate for a villa with a private pool and an unobstructed view by booking it at a great discount with John Everington at True Beachfront. His website is terrific for reviewing every beachfront location in Phuket and providing phenomenall discounts for certain properties.

The Ayara Kamala has a commanding location. Sunsets are majestic and magical. Accommodations are superb. The private swimming pools are absolutely amazing. Your privacy is guaranteed.

While there are so many pluses, there are a few negative in our opinion.

1. A few families with babies and small noisy children do stay here but the ones we saw were fairly well behaved. They are most visible and audible at breakfast and thankfully spend the rest of the time around the private pool at their parents' villa. Also because of the children the staff leave an annoying HUGE plastic unicorn in the magnificent infinity pool that ruins all pictures. They should remove it and only have it available upon request and then remove it after the babies-children leave. It is an eyesore and detracts from the elegance and exclusiveness of the property. I had mistakenly thought that the propery was child free due to its hilly and remote location but many Chinese families with small children do stay at the property. We had to request a villa change due to the noisy and incessant crying and shrieking of toddlers in an adjacent villa. We are very grateful to management that they accommodated our request.
2. While the staff really do try to please, service needs to be improved.I hope that management will take note. Their command of the English language could also be enhanced. It is very limited.
A The food is suberb, but service is incredibly SLOW. Breakfast is indeed very good but there is not as much variety as at other comparable resorts. It does seem to cater to Asian rather than western tastes. At lunch on our departing day our waiter completely forgot about our order. After waiting for well over an hour, we brought the matter to their attention and they did provide us with free alcoholic beverages while we waited again! The view was easy on the eyes and I did swim in the magnificent infinity pool, so there are worse ways to wait for one's food!
B Since it was our 25 th weddiing anniversary the maid did an incredible job at arranging the most beautiful swan decoration with towels on our bed. I loved it so much I moved it intact carefully to a special location. Later in the day she dismantled it.!! Towels are not that precious as they use them to clean the toilets. Read on. The next day I spoke to her in sign language in a way that she could understand that I loved the towel swans and I hoped that she would put them back. She did not. Now I regret the tip we left her.
3. Hygiene really needs to be improved.
a. I saw the staff setting the tables for dinner in their lovely restaurant. Unfortunately they put the cutlery down on the chairs where customers sit before they put on the table cloths!???
b. I saw the cleaning staff clean the toilets. They use the same fluffy white towels we use for out baths to clean the toilets!! They should use toilet brushes!! This is really gross. This may be a Thai thing and not just confined to the Ayara Kamala. It just happens that I was there when the cleaning lady was there

We rented a car and saw every part of Phuket. If you only have a few days in Phuket, please forget about going to Patong. in our opinion, it is definitely not worth it unless you have lots of time to spend in Phuket. Ayara Kamala is gorgeous and classy. In the dry season the Ayara does have a rocky little private beach, but it is man made. If you adore beaches you are better off heading to Karon Beach in the south or to Nathon Beach in the north. Patong is noisy, tacky and sleazy and the beach and its water are polluted even if the water looks clear. The best shopping is in Bangkok and definitely not Patong. The only night show worth seeing in Patong is Simon's Cabaret. If you have time for a full day excursion then by all means visit the extraordinary Phang Nga Bay by taking the June Bahtra Chinese Junk cruise or take a day trip to visit the Phi Phi Islands but make sure you leave very early to avoid crowds.

We had a memorable time here and you will too. Highly recommend if you are a romantic and are looking for peace and quiet. Not for night owls or those out of shape who cannot do stairs.

Eat your durian hot
Reviewed 4 weeks ago

When you arrived a panel informs you not to keep durian in the refrigerator. So you eat it warm in your room and it smells even more. Enforcement of that rule seems lax as staff is so kind and helpful with guests. Great choice of food for breakfast including an excellent local green curry. And their croissant are tasty something rate in most hotels. Rooms are great with spectacular view. No beach where you could swim but nice for picture. Be easy of the elevator taking you there the metallic structure is eaten by sea water (see picture).Do not go to the advertise guided market tour. There is no guide. The shuttle drops you there and you tour the place in 20 minutes. Then you are stuck there for two hours waiting the shuttle to come back.It was raining and I suppose that the shuttle driver did not want to get wet as he did not bother to lower the plastic curtains to protect us from the rain. We reached the hotel soaked. Overall s still ap pleasant stay far from everything that can be visited on the island

Five stars minus one

This is our four days stay in the Ayara Kamala Resort and Spa. The staff here are helpful and professional. They show enthusiasm and great attitude towards their work. My wife and I are enjoying the relaxing environment and the natural atmosphere there.
But after two days stay in the Room A2 we have to change our room as we decided to move to the one without swimming pool outside. The reason is we have joined a local tour to the outward islands for the whole day so we are not able to swim in the room. We told the staff there the night before about the switch and she said we just left the luggage in Room A2 and the staff would help us to move to the new room. On that morning to the outward islands we met a lady at the reception called TAM, we told her about the arrangement that we made last night. She said she didn’t know anything about this after a phone call. She TOLD US TO MOVE THE LUGGAGE BY OURSELVES. My wife is pregnant and she is not able to help. I do it by myself. I pick up the two luggage weighing about 25kg to go upstairs to the reception. And then Ms TAM told her colleague to move the luggage back to the store room just next to the Room A2. She told us to return the key to her and said “Done”. I burst to laugh and ask my wife what is meant by “Done”?
I would like to show our appreciation towards the service provided by the hotel especially the staff in the restaurant. The breakfast are good and the dinner are great. Thank you for the free shuttle to the Kamala Beach and the anniversary cake as a surprise to our trip.
Overall this is a five stars minus one stay in the hotel.

Simply amazing

Can not fault this hotel! We had a wonderful stay here, the views over the sea are breath taking and the rooms were spacious and clean.

Breakfast has alot of variety and was always very tasty.
What makes this hotel even better is the staff. They are so friendly and really can not do enough for you. They are a credit.

We would certainly return to this hotel and would recommend. Stay here.

Beautiful resort, amazing service, great location

We stayed for 5 nights and booked the honeymoon package on the hotel’s website, a really good deal. It includes round trip transfer from airport, couples spa, evening high tea, and a guaranteed room upgrade (amazing views). Mr. Park greeted us from the airport, and he was very nice and informative. The reception ladies were always very helpful and friendly. We had problems with our island tours, and they were very willing to help us out. The breakfast at the hotel is very good. They have a variety of food to choose from, all very delicious! We had both lunch and dinner at the hotel. Price were more on the pricey side. Nevertheless, the food served were delicious and well presented. Thanks to Mr. Kit for his great service every morning and afternoon, and the rest of the team for our comfortable stay. We will definitely be back.
