Overview

Family-run retreat in laid-back Kamala with an organic spa and an infinity pool overlooking the Andaman Sea

The Lowdown

A 30-minute drive from the bustle of Phuket town, the family-run Ayara Kamala Resort showcases Thailand’s natural assets, from the fresh seafood served at the Cradle restaurant and the organic treatments at the spa to the Andaman Sea views from the infinity pool. Local designer Khun V has created 42 stylish guestrooms that range from simple but chic balcony rooms to vast Grand Pool Villas. And Khun V’s daughter, who trained at the Swiss Hotel Management School, brings expert hospitality skills to the mix. Hot days and sultry nights see guests cooling off at the Ayara Parlour (which has a 360-degree glass-walled upper deck), at the quintessentially Thai spa or at the Overflow bar, where cocktails are a specialty. Guests can also sign up for scuba diving, cooking classes and visits to local tailors.

In the Area

If it’s peace and quiet you’re looking for in Phuket, then Kamala is just the spot, with its villagey atmosphere and a smattering of seafood shacks and shops. The top place to dine is the low-key, family-run Charoen Seafood restaurant, which has been serving the freshest seafood for the past 20 years. Families will enjoy the fantastically kitsch Phuket Fantasea theme park. If high culture is more your cup of tea, it’s worth hopping over to nearby Phuket town for a wander around its Chinese temples, Portuguese shop houses and cool new boutiques and cafés; try the China Inn Café for lunch and Suay for a contemporary Thai dinner.

Impeccable view, but the staff really made the difference with their warmth.
Reviewed 2 days ago

We booked the Grand Pool Villa Ocean View for 4 nights, and was utterly amazed at the view. At the top of a cliff in Kamala Beach, overlooking the ocean unblocked, unadulterated. At night, my daughter and i dipped our feet into the pool and counted stars. It was that beautiful.

Yes it is not uncommon to find such a room in Phuket, but the difference maker is the warmth of the staff. Through the Thai cooking class, we met staff whom greeted us every day since - Chef Kwan, Chef Clerk, Art to name a few - and they will stop at nothing to make us feel at home and taken care of.

We took at day tour from the hotel and they brought us out on a mini-van (there was only 3 of us). At the end of the tour, we had drinks, and a cold towel each! (I mean, it's not much but at the moment cold towels felt heavenly in hot scorching sun).

As first time travellers to Phuket, we always felt we can approach anyone to ask anything about Phuket, and front desk staff Dew made sure to explain clearly the various nice places Phuket has to offer. We thank her for the patience.

All in all, with a toddler in tow, i would highly recommend Ayara Kamala if you intend to really soak in scenic ocean view. Do consider packing food whenever as the vicinity does not offer any restaurant options (shuttle service down to restaurant area takes 10 min, then its a 2 hour wait for the next shuttle back). Minor drawback, cup noodles can help :)

Oh one last thing - all 4 nights around 3am, there were raging storms. The pool water was literally scooped up and splashed onto our glass panel doors. Quite an adventure to wake up to such phenomenon. (If you know the history of Phuket, it is not very fun at the moment...) Do ask for higher floors if you are wary, like me.

Nice staff but Facilities need to be improved
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

We are 6 adults and 1 child in total and stayed in 3 bedrooms villa for two nights. Slightly disappointed that three rooms are separated into two floors. The pool is in the second floor which is not convenient. Because we have to come up from outside stair and then go to the pool. All the facilities needed better maintenance. Especially, the gym room really needed big improvement.

But anyway, the staff is very nice and helpful which is the highlight of this stay

Breakfast place is the only good part of the hotel
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

My bf and I stayed two nights here. We stayed in an Ocean view, 80 square meters room with private pool. But we could not enjoy it much because:
1. We couldnt access wifi and the hotel couldnt fix it.
2. Many mosquitos in the room. Better after we light up the mosquito repellent incense.
3. The room is not clean, furniture quite old
4. We saw a super big spider on toilet floor....😂

But good thing is that the breakfast place is very nice with good view.

Resort with great view & ambience but rooms for improvement for a 5 star hotel
Reviewed 3 weeks ago

Needless to say the view of the resort is amazing, as it over look the ocean and rooms are huge. Really enjoyed time at the pool where you can see the amazing ocean view as you swim alongside.

However they really need to upgrade their culinary team. First night dinner at the Cradle, great ambience, romantic but our food (tong yum gong soup & lemon steam fish), its disappointing as both are not hot at all and didn't seems like it's freshly cooked and the lemon steam fish just tasted bland. We definitely had concern when we had better Thai food at a local restaurant than our own 5 star hotel. Breakfast semi buffet food quality is not good, just looked like it's been out for a while. We had their smoothie bowl it's way too watery. Peanut butter oats had too much peanut butter in it. Poached egg with salmon was bland.

In terms of service, the bell boy was the only people that we can feel they like working at the hotel. The rest of the staff is not attentive enough and doesn't really look happy working there. Housekeeping lady looked pissed when we asked for more shower gel and was constantly on her cell phone when we were trying to talk to her, same when we were checking out and didn't even say hello.

We really had high expectation for our stay, but we think there are huge rooms for improvement in terms of service and food, and we hope that the hotel can really review it and improve for their future guest.

Excellent for everything
