This shiny new skyscraper opened in April 2013 and sits smack in the center of Bangkok’s Sukhumvit tourist vortex. In the lobby the Sofitel brand’s French roots are apparent in the form of elegant velvet furnishings and avant-garde light fittings, while elaborate displays of orchids and a smoldering copper color scheme feel distinctly Thai. The decor takes second place, though, at the L’Appart rooftop lounge, where the glittering city views dominate.
Bed and Bath
Chocolate walls, smooth wood surfaces and muted olive and gold soft furnishings give the guestrooms a soothing, if not terribly exciting, look and feel. Glass-walled bathrooms have tubs, monsoon showers and L’Occitane or Hermès amenities. The beds are supremely comfortable, and high-tech touches include Bose docks and lots of international TV channels. Additionally, Club Rooms have espresso machines, in-room fitness equipment and personalized butler service. Both Club Rooms and Suites offer access to the Millésime Club Lounge for breakfast and all-day snacks and drinks.
After navigating the neighborgood’s maze of malls and markets, flop down on a chic black daybed by the rooftop pool or book a lavender-scented signature treatment at Le Spa with L’Occitane. Suitably refreshed, take the elevator up to the 32nd floor for a glass of bubbly at the rooftop lounge as the sun sets over the steamy city. There are two dining options available: L’Appart, a gorgeous French restaurant in a Haussman-style dining room, and Voilà!, where an international buffet is served from live cooking stations.
In the Area
In the middle of one of Bangkok’s busiest thoroughfares, in a sea of shops, markets, bars and restaurants, you couldn’t be better placed for exploring the city. Take a left out of the hotel and walk five minutes to the trendy Terminal 21 shopping mall; this mammoth retail space has floors themed around world cities and is packed with pieces from cool local designers. Foodwise, go local with a bag of som tam (spicy papaya salad) on the street, try gastropub Little Beast or put on your best threads for a fancy dinner at Quince.
How to Get There
I keep coming back to this hotel for many reasons, but the biggest reason is the high level of customer service. All the important things you would expect in a five star hotel are there, plus a few other things that I think this location excels at. I love the gym, and the very helpful staff that always take great care of me. They also have a new rooftop bar named Belga, with has an amazing selection of craft beers, and one of the nicest views in the city. The location is also perfect, very close to bts NANA and ASOK terminals, which you will find very convenient. Must also mention the little coffee / dessert shop named Le Macaron. The coffee is very good, and there is a very nice selection of pastries, desserts and sandwiches. Finally I would like give a personal thank you to Khun (Miss) Nong, and the other Le Macaron ladies for the amazing service I always receive.
Sofitel Bangkok is our favourite hotel! It is such a happy and professional atmosphere at the same time, we love this mix. So much generosity regarding service, kindness and equipment. Yes it is the staff and the teams in each section bringing so much soul to this 5-star hotel.
Upon arrival we were welcomed so warmly at the reception and from Manager Khun Theodor, it felt like coming home and we could relax immediately. The room was ready ( at 9 am!) spacious, quiet and had a wonderful view. A big Vintage Coffeemachine and Occitane products contributed to our wellbeing. The pool area is awesome and the service of the team bringing us fresh towels, water and fresh fruits helped us overcoming the jetlag. And after long days walking through Bangkok it is nice to spend the afternoon and sunset there. Now the breakfast at Voila Restaurant: we never ever experienced such a good service and variety of dishes. It is heaven!! The kindness of the staff is again outstanding. You do not have to ask or call someone, they are so proaktive coming many times to the table taking the order for the coffee or whatever you wish for. And they clean the table inbetween regulareky and so on and so on... especially during Chinese New Year when the restaurant was full and very busy they always kept the overview and their friendliness. For us the "fresh juice bar" was so much fun- you can choose from the huge variety of veggies and fruits being nicely displayed and in front of your eyes they press them-tasty, colourful and healthy. Thank to the whole team there making our monings such happy ones!
The Fitness area is very well maintained, clean and spacious and while exercising you see the skyline of Bangkok. Very entertaining. Whenever you have a question or need support the team is there to advise and help.
Needless to say: we come back as soon as possible enjoying this vibrant hotel! Life is magnifique!!!
I have stayed here two times but the rooms are runned down, service not at all personal, they like to take in cheep chinese groups..not at all 5*, as of that I will not stay again in this hotel, it makes you feel ripped off to pay the official rate when you experience all the other guests... was my last stay here and will check out the newly opened hotel just next door... of another company.
We have become regulars at Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit.
In 2018, we had more than 30 nights at the hotel spread out on the year, about 3 nights in average per stay.
We have used the hotel as our base during my wife’ health treatments in Bangkok. I have reviewed the hotel before, and this time is a general review covering the experiences as mentioned above - and also triggered after we tried some other 5 star hotels in Bangkok.
The service is really good at this hotel. Staff is very well trained. It is friendly, prompt, top class but at same time down to earth.
The facilities are also good. It is an older hotel in Bangkok, but very well maintained. We chose the hotel for its location close to my wife’s hospital, and after a few stays due to its consistent high level of service, and generous treatment with upgrades to suites.
Ordinary rooms are typically big, well lay out and all you need. Well sound insulated (both from rooms and traffic noice), lots of power outlets, not too confusing in terms of lights switches, good water pressure in shower and nice comfortable bed. Just what you expect and pay for in a 5 star hotel. The suites are of course even better and comfortable. Some has private small outdoor jacuzzi and terazzes, and huge indoor floor area with separate living room etc. I think we have been spoilt with room upgrades and of course this is “coloring” by positive view on the hotel... but still the service at this hotel is really good, and I recommend the hotel for just that alone.
Pool area nice. Gym very good - and staff in gym and pool area very helpful and service minded.
As a platinum member of Accor, we have access to the lounge on 31st floor. The staff during cocktail hours 5-7pm provide super service and quality of wine is good. The selection of food is nice, but with the many many nights we have stayed - we have learned they don’t change much in variety.
The breakfast at lounge is nice - limited in selections compared with Voila on 2nd floor (as it is often in lounges). The break fast staff in the lounge can be a bit hit and miss in terms of service level, but they really try hard to make you happy. The coffee is better at Voila than lounge - something I also often experience in 5 star hotels. Asking for an americano will typically result in a filter coffee brewed overburned cup of coffee. Perhaps junior staff in morning for lounge break fast as part of training program?
The roof restaurant on 32nd floor has been renovated during 2018. I didn’t yet try the new “Belgium style” food and beer restaurant, so can’t comment on it. I ate at the Le-Apparment before the renovation, and the food, views and service was spotless... but prices on the high side. Same goes with the dinner buffet at Voila on 2nd floor - it is a bit pricey. Food very good, staff very friend and service minded. I’m a Accor Plus member, so get up to 50% discount in the restaurant, and then it becomes quite a better value.
The hotel market in Bangkok is very competitive. Sofital Bangkok Sukhumvit is not the cheapest on the block. I’m sure there are other hotel in Bangkok in same neighbourhood that can deliver similar experience for properly half of Sofitel room rate. We stay at Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit for the consistency of services from the great well trained staff, and because we are always welcomed, greated and treated as friends of the hotel. The management can be proud of its staff, they truly makes a difference.
We booked the weekly wine and cheese buffet, 2-hours all you can eat wine and cheese for 25 euros. Good quality and choice. Special thanks to Melanie who take care of us and give us good advise and tips on the wine choices.
