On the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the 36-floor Chatrium Hotel Riverside offers a peaceful escape from Bangkok’s city center chaos; its hip lobby, attentive service and modern, apartment-style rooms all lend a feeling of serenity. The giant infinity pool and outdoor Jacuzzi front the river, and the on-site seafood restaurants offer panoramic skyline views. There are convenient amenities aplenty: spacious rooms with kitchenettes, a fitness center, a grocery store and an ATM, so it attracts its fair share of business travelers, but this is a classy corporate crowd.
Bed and Bath
Starting at 646 square feet, even the smallest rooms feel spacious. Floor-to-ceiling windows let the light flood in, while thick curtains block it out when jetlag dictates a daytime nap. There are balconies off all rooms, and it’s definitely worth paying extra for a river view. Beds are comfy, linens are of a high quality, and all rooms feature kitchenettes and dining areas, should you wish to cook up a storm or bring street food back from the markets. Bathrooms are glass-walled affairs, which some will love and others will hate; eco-friendly toiletries are a definite win.
There are three on-site eateries, including the very popular top-floor dim sum Chinese restaurant, Silver Waves, and a snack bar by the infinity pool. Children are taken care of with two dedicated swimming pools and on-site babysitting services. The Nemita Spa offers traditional Thai massages — as well as less intense Western-style ones. Finally, a Starbucks and 7-Eleven are within stumbling distance of the front door, should you crave hometown comforts.
How to Get There
We only had one night in Bangkok so our location was very important to us. When arriving they upgraded us to a suite complete with a spectacular river view. We were two blocks from one of the best restaurants in town and a short walk to a huge night market. On the way to the market we had an hour massage for $300 baht each or ($9 cdn) . The breakfast buffet was wonderful, We would definitely return to Chatrium Hotel on the River.
I would stay here only for the view from the rooms (riverview), we had a room 28th floor and it was amazing to lie in the bed and se the sun rise in the morning. Good connection to sky train with the shuttle boat (free). Fantastic pool and very good food (and a lot of choices!). Pimporn vas so lovely to us and our little son, and made sure we had everything we needed, but also the rest of the staff were very friendly!
Who ever set up 4.5 -5 stars for this place, doesn't know what he's doing. Very far from that score, and I've stayed at many hotels.
First, it caters to Chinese budget travellers. The restaurant on 36th floor is Chinese, the music at breakfast on Sunday at 6am is Chinese and so on.
Here's a list of what we found disappointing:
- Underground car park stinks like a sewer.
-Staff doesn't understand English well enough. Called down to ask about the dresscode (shorts/long trousers) for top floor restaurant, was passed around to 3 people and nobody understood what I talked about.
- Room a bit broken, phone unglugged behind the bed, TV menue language was set to Thai, toilet sink drain didn't work.
- Welcome drink on 36th floor at 5pm. Staff makes you sit down and wait. Then later, when they had time, they come and see you for your free drink. Should be called unwelcome-drink.
-Pool packed with uncontrolled kids screaming and screeching all over the place. The nice tourists also brought up some of these "air horns" to the 36th floor during sunset.
Biggest thing would be the massive construction site right outside the room, waking us up with heavy slamming and noise on Sunday morning.
Needless to say, we wouldn't stay or recommend this budget hotel to anybody we know.
We had luckily only one night free stay with a voucher, but we kind of felt we should have stayed home since it's much better than this hotel.
I have stayed at Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok several times. I delight in the amenities, comfort, service, convenience, luxury and attention bestowed by this hotel. I have always enjoyed my stays at this hotel. Recently I heard some construction in the morning. I inquired how long the construction was to continue and Nick had me and all of my belongings moved into an upgraded suite within 20 minutes of my casual inquiry. I was astounded. I cannont recommend this hotel highly enough.
We are so happy we chose this property and would absolutely choose it again!
We stayed for 5 days/nights with two children under 5. Traveling with young kids is difficult, but this was the perfect home base. A beautiful property!
Our suite room was spacious. The staff even added a cot for us before we arrived to make sure we had enough sleeping space! The kids loved the child toiletry bags and the big tub & shower.
The pools were a huge bonus for us. I knew there was a pool, but I did not realize when booking that there are 3 pools with different depth options. It was so perfect for our young swimmers and cooling off after a busy day of touring was so pleasant.
Our booking included the breakfast buffet, which was large with huge variety. There’s no chance of not being satisfied with your meal because it covers every possible style and taste. We enjoyed the dinner buffet one evening and used room service a couple times, and all the food we ate on property was good. I will say the dinner buffet was busier than breakfast which made it slightly less enjoyable, but still good. So nice to have options on site, so we could keep our worn out babes nearby. We also stopped in at the lobby lounge multiple times for coffee and snacks for an afternoon pickup. A nice amenity & experience. Room service was very enjoyable and tasty.
This is not the least expensive option, but I was impressed with the value. I feel we got a very good experience for the price. We could have payed a similar price for a much lesser property in the US. The attention to detail here really elevates the whole experience.
The only hiccups were small - not receiving enough towels when the room was cleaned, one concierge was not especially helpful - very easy to remedy. The rest of the staff were very accommodating and kind.
This hotel is not right in the middle of the action, but the staff is quick to get you transport via road or you can take the shuttle boat to the main pier to catch a taxi boat or use the skyrail. Taxis are really reasonable.
Our memories of this trip will be very happy and much of that positive tone stems from the wonderful stay at Chatrium!
