How to Get There
When visiting The Grand Hotel and Ballroom in December 2018, I was impressed with the efforts of the staff to make sure my stay was pleasant. Expedia messed up the initial reservation but the Hotel staff went above and beyond to make sure they had a room and that my needs were met. I not only had accommodations in the original building, the staff also honored my request to spend a few days in one of the new suites they had just opened across the street. Everything you need in the way of food and entertainment is withing walking distance. Check this place out!!
We came to McKinney for a romantic night away from home. Let me say that the best thing about this hotel is it's location near the historic McKinney town center. They have free valet parking, so no worries there. Lots of good restaurants and shopping very close by.
Now the downside -- be sure to get a room with a window! I knew this, but wound up with a room with no window -- not a deal breaker, but seriously creepy to have a brick wall where the window should be.
NEXT -- (and this almost did me in) -- the cryptic thermostat (no written instructions on how to make this thing work) -- We alternately froze and broiled the entire stay. Asked at the front desk -- "how does the thermostat work?" -- (it was 25 degrees and raining outside, but 70 degrees just a few days prior -- aka normal Texas weather) -- the front desk said, "oh! we need to be sure the heating is turned on"...?? Seriously, there were 4 little icons on the thermostat to indicate the mode (we could only identify snowflake for A/C and maybe the Fan mode (?)) otherwise could not tell what mode, whether or not it was on or off (red light indicates "on"), anything. It was 60 degrees in the room when we arrived and we never got it right -- thank goodness there is a heavy comforter on the bed. BTW, the bed itself was exceptionally comfortable.
I loved the towels and the bath products were exceptional. Loved the loofah that came with the shower gel (awesome!). The room was nicely furnished and I did appreciate the coffee maker in the morning.
We had a great time and the rooms were great. 5 couples, all next to each other, put together by Jackie and her staff!! Breakfast was fantastic. Well worth it if you just want to get away for a night or two.
Room reached 78 degrees in the night, continueing until our check-out. Even though we made adjustments with our in-room thermostat. We normally like our sleeping room temp. to be around 69, so this was extremely hot for us... We complained to the desk clerk. She said the thermostat in our room was in-opperable, that only 1 thermostat (in another rm.) controls 4 rms. She offered no compensation for our VERY UNCOMFORTBLE night and acted unconcerned with our displeasure.
This is one of those easy reviews for me because we make this same trip every year around the holidays, so obviously we enjoy it! Let me start with the Grand itself, since that is where this review will appear. We love the quaint hotel, located just a few feet off one of the best town squares in Texas! The staff is always friendly, the rooms well appointed with antiques and just a hint of the history of this beautiful property, which has been wonderfully restored. We always purchase the romance package, so we have a bottle of chilled champagne and chocolate covered strawberries waiting for us in our room, and then enjoy a fantastic steak at Rick’s Chophouse...which is included in the package and attached to the hotel. All in all, a wonderful weekend! My only negative comments would be the noise level when in room, and the chair in our room was past worn out!
